UFO That Threw “Boiling Oil” On Witness
A forwarded account from Kentaro Mori’s forgetomori site is both funny and frightening, and an example of the high strangeness from South American UFO sightings that I have always found interesting:
The story that Francisco Henrique de Souza, nicknamed “Januncio”, told late ufologist Bob Pratt is somewhat unique. One night of January 1979, he was walking home alone on Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.
Around the middle of his way, he decided to lit (sic) a cigarette. That was his mistake, as that apparently caught the attention of an overhead flying saucer that started to follow him very closely. He was terrorized.
“Januncio” described the object as cylindrical, around 6-7 meters in height and 3-4 meters in diameter. It was extremely close to him, only a couple of meters over his head, and he described seeing two people inside, a man and a woman, seated. “The woman looked like she was wearing a dress”.
The object emitted a light that somehow sucked Januncio. To avoid being captured by the light, he grabbed a palm tree as best as he could — in the photo above, Januncio shows the bizarre situation.
The article goes on to say that the the “oil” was probably melted off the tree and onto the witness, since it was a Carnauba tree–the same plant that provides the wax for expensive car finishes and is even a food additive. The cylindrical shape of the UFO is an intriguing detail as well, even though the account calls it a “flying saucer.”

How can anyone make sense of that case? How can one verify any of this?

Man, if only I had a Flying Saucer to terrorize all those people that smoke on forbidden zones!
Ok, seriously, all those “Chupa Chupas” cases from Brazil in the 1970s are all really weird and interesting. I’ve read about them on spanish magazines like “Enigmas” and “Año cero”, and I’m glad they are being discussed on english-speaking forums.

misteranderson,
You can’t make any sense out of it or verify it, at least not very well. I just thought that it was interesting. If it’s made up, it’s still interesting to me as a pretty strange folk tale.
No, it’s not going to advance any study or “solve” the UFO question, but it’s a good story.

RPJ,
I got hooked on the UFO thing partially because of the APRO books by the Lorenzens, who were perhaps one of the first groups to look into South American cases. They had the North American stories beat for weird and scary details. This “boiling oil” account makes me feel like I’m 10 years old again, going to the library to check out UFO books like a fiend.
