UFO That Acted Like A Rocket

In light of the recent comments hereabouts on John Keel and his reports of unusual flying things that look like private airplanes I came across a report from last year of a UFO that looked like a rocket launch.

I subscribe to a mailing list called “Launch Alert,” which sends out bulletins when there are scheduled rocket and missile launches from Vandenberg Air Force Base, which is about 3 hours from where I live. Yesterday, I watched the Worldview 1 imaging satellite rise into space south across the Pacific Ocean, on its way into a polar orbit.

Looking around on Space Archive, the home site of Launch Alert, I discovered a little section called “unusual sightings.” The most interesting one (reported on May 9th of 2006) describes an apparent conventional rocket which did something very unconventional:

I saw the launch this morning from about 650 miles west and 41,000 [feet] up. A great place to see a launch. I was wondering what kind of launch vehicle it was. It seemed to travel mostly in a westward arc but after what appeared to be a couple of stage separations a forward moving puff of smoke appeared and then the object seemed to go staight up from that point continuing as a point of light going up vertically until we lost sight of it.

There were no scheduled or observed launches from Vandenberg that day. The witness was in a jet flying over the Eastern Pacific Ocean off the California coast.

The object was either something quite unexplainable, or a possibly space vehicle belonging to our military that has some very unusual launch characteristics. The fact that the witness saw it from an airliner (along with others on separate flights) makes it unusual that air traffic was not alerted. I believe that there is a temporary no-flight restriction in the airspace around Vandenberg during launches.

    A military suborbital space plane?

There was this article about the so-called project Black Star, I think it was published in Aviation Week some time ago.

    Check this:

    red pill,

Totally excellent article. Thanks for the link. It may well have been a test (or operational deployment) of this “Blackstar” system. The witness description appears to indicate that something fired after at least two stage separations. Interesting that the AWAST article calls the rumored Blackstar platform an example of the “Two Stage To Space” concept. How it was able to overcome the angular velocity from flying what appeared to be almost horizontal and changing to a vertical trajectory may be a result of observational difficulties, but such a dramatic change in direction is hard to reconcile with conventional rocket tech. I also find it interesting that the witness does not mention any exhaust trail associated with the “point of light going up vertically.”

The AWAST text also mentions that Blackstar may have been retired as of the date of the article (May 2006.) Also noted is that hybrid spaceplane/ rocket systems were conceptually valid as far back as the late 1950s. We all know where that puts today’s technology, so perhaps we shouldn’t be so surprised at the sort of strange maneuvers described by the witness.

Given the size of the US black budget, this may be just one of many ’stealth’ satellite launching systems. Remember the Pegasus LEO micro satellite system? From experience, the US military never retires a recon system or weapons platform unless they have a better one. Giving the known capabilities of the former Soviet recon sensor systems, the US would have developed multiple stealth satellite killers capable of sweeping the skies of any potential recon/weapons threats. As Greg pointed out in his book SDI did work but with all things military, the secret US missile defense system will be a layered defense with the ability to destroy a missile in any phase of its flight path to include the sub-orbital.
