Robert Girard of Arcturus Books has been selling UFO-related books to the Ufology community and the world at large since at least the 1970s, I believe. Girard used to send out catalogs with his wonderfully frank and curmudgeonly reviews, which made for great reading. He would lambast a title and then say something like “OK if you’re into that sort of stupidity.” These were for titles from his OWN CATALOG. Next to Jim Moseley’s Saucer Smear, it remains my favorite “UFO periodical.” Now Girard is facing expensive surgery without any medical insurance. Instead of asking for donations like any normal whiner would do, he’s encouraging people to buy his books, including titles from his own collection. Here is the message he sent out to his customers, with Girard’s endearing cynicism and humor still very much in evidence. Buy something from the man. Dear Customers:

Arcturus Books has never needed your help as much as it does today. Two years ago when that noble health care provider, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida raised my health insurance from $836.00 to nearly $1.600.00 a month, I knew that I was about to join the 40-million-member ranks of the uninsured. Having no other choice, I threw health insurance overboard, along with Life Insurance, and began to hope that I could limp on onto Medicare when I turned 65 next July. A disastrous hospitalization has now crushed those hopes.

If you can afford that much, then at least you will pick up some great books at low Arcturus prices.
