Swarming Micro-Bots As Aliens

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have started to develop swarms of microscopic robots with the goal of creating macro-robots made up of thousands (or millions) of tiny “smart particles” which should be able to assume any three-dimensional form imaginable. Showing that they are again right on top of advance technologies, the Air Force Research Lab (at Wright-Patterson AFB no less) are working with Carnegie Mellon scientists to develop even smaller and more shape-shiftable robots.
The Nanotechnology Now site has more on this subject, reported in March of 2006:
Nanotechnology is based on the concept of tiny, self-replicating robots. The Utility Fog is a very simple extension of the idea: Suppose, instead of building the object you want atom by atom , the tiny robots linked their arms together to form a solid mass in the shape of the object you wanted? Then, when you got tired of that avant-garde coffeetable, the robots could simply shift around a little and you’d have an elegant Queen Anne piece instead.
Here’s a short list of the powers you’d have or appear to have if embedded in fog:
- Creation–causing objects to appear and disappear on command.
- Levitation–causing objects to hover and fly around.
- Manipulation–causing forces (squeezing, hitting, pulling) on objects (real ones) at a distance.
- Teleportation–nearly any combination of telepresence and virtual reality between fog-filled locations
Sound familiar? Could this be how the UFO/ paranormal intelligence operates? It’s an intriguing idea.
Oh, C2C beat me to it. The webmaster must have been looking at Mac Tonnies’ site.

Its a not-uncommon motif in a lot of
modern Science Fiction. It makes me
profoundly uncomfortable, but I grew up when spaceships have fins.
Nanotechnology would go a long way toward explaining a lot of the more
“magical” aspects of UFO behavior-but
it still doesn’t address the cultural
implications. ( Again, assuming these
are craft from an extraterrestrial
civilization. )

This seems to tie in quite well with one of the SETI related theories that if alien live is already here on earth it is probably in nano-botic form, which is why we can’t see it (in answer to the Fermi Paradox).
It has also been mentioned that if we are ever to send out intergalactic space probes they would have to be nano-sized because we can currenly only create very small wormholes… or whatever it is that the casimir effect can achieve.

Great! Now what?? Are we gonna start calling them Unidentified Foglet Objects?

Craig,
I don’t know why anyone should be disturbed by the idea of micro-bots, except that we might see a swarm of manmade ones and not know what they’re doing or who is using them and for what purpose. THAT’s scary to me.
I think the idea of non-human intelligence using the same concept is actually a cultural reflection of the phenomenon, since I sometimes believe that our brains interact with it to reflect our own preconceptions.
I also suggested (without really explaining it) that at least some sightings of weird things may be caused by a force or intelligence that uses some form of natural “microbots” as its medium for our benefit. Does this make sense?

uv777bk,
Mac Tonnies has been suggesting this for a couple of years now. It’s certainly an intriguing area of speculation.

RPJ,
Good one. Maybe we will!
