Missing Millionaire Aviator Captured by Aliens
This story has been skulking around for a few weeks now, and there is of course no way to prove any of it (just like most of the UFO subject) but it has elements of contacteeism and other urban (and internet) myths that are interesting and that I also happen to enjoy.
You may be aware of the disappearance of Steven Fossett in September of last year. Fossett held multiple world records in flight (among them, first circumnavigation of the globe in a balloon and an airplane, the speed record for an airship and the glider altitude record of 50,727 feet.) He took off on the morning of September 3, 2007 in a single engine trainer, reportedly to look for dry lake beds in Nevada on which to attempt land speed records. He did not file a flight plan.
When Fossett was not heard from for several hours (after the plane should have run out of fuel) a large search effort was engaged by the Civil Air Patrol and other organizations. As the search wore on and nothing was discovered, satellite imagery was used, which located previously unknown air crash sites, but no trace of Fossett was ever found. On November 27, Fossett’s wife asked to have her husband declared legally dead.
Now, someone calling himself “Simon” claims to be receiving emails from a friend of Fossett’s claiming that the famous explorer was searching for some sort of dimensional hole populated with aliens:
He told me that he had spotted a mysterious white light of circular shape on the ground during one of his reconnaissance flights around the neighborhood. He said he had never noticed that light before. He told me that he went back home without investigating but kept thinking about the light and where it could be coming from, since it was in a deserted region. He just went on and on with the light and I couldn’t even say one word. He said that he went back a few days later to investigate, but the light had somehow moved about a quarter mile up north. He landed.Almost as if the light had felt him approaching, it instantly moved to a nearby hill. He said he couldn’t believe what was happening in front of him and he tried to call home to tell Peggy. But his phone mysteriously had died.As he approached, he could see that the light was in fact a large “hole”, and there were several blue-ish humanoids moving inside. Nobody seemed to notice him as he walked closer, and he was beginning to see what was like a whole new society in there, half-underground, half-exposed to sun light, right there in the middle of the desert.
The account resembles many others that have come out of the desert southwest telling of lost undergound races, some of them most likely perpetrated in order to advance land or mining schemes. He also claims that Fossett is now living with the underground aliens. Of course I have no faith in this story, but I am interested in how the anonymous “friend” intends to keep the stories going. It’s also disappointing that he may be using the name and reputation of a truly great explorer to advance a weird story. One statement is revealing:
I assure you I want no money or attention from the media for this, I just wanted to share this bizarre story with someone who believed me. A New York Times journalist called me a “nut job” but I assure you I am of sound body and mind, and I really do hope that one day my friend Steve will come clear this up for us…
If he wants no attention from the media, how did a NYT writer find out about him?
One possibility for the disappearance is that Fossett may have wandered into restricted airspace and been dealt with by unscrupulous missiles or jet fighters. Admittedly, the probability is remote, since Fossett should have been well familiar with the area and military operations zones. Perhaps the shadowy “M,” as he refers to himself, is a counterintelligence agent testing the rumor mill. Who knows?
If there is any truth to the story, it might be interesting, but it will probably die away like so many others. Have the Coast to Coast people got ahold of this one yet?

I’ll have to go back and see who the guest was (actually now, I’m thinking it may have been a caller on open lines)did suggest to George that Fossett had been hied away to another dimension. I believe that idea had a bit of lingering power; I think it was referred to at least a couple more times. This is way prior to M. Maybe it’s inevitable because of Fossett’s adventurer/explorer reputation–but many many people ‘go missing’ in small planes; just look how many they found on the search for him. It’s not that big a mystery.

I think it is complete bs but it’s a heck of a story. The part where Steve pays a visit to his wife is also interesting. With all the planes that have gone missing in that area I think it’s only a matter of time before a book comes out creating a new Bermuda Triangle mythology. Anyway, when I read what this guy was saying I thought of the press conference scene from Raising Arizona:
“lt’s rumored your son
was abducted by UFOs.”
“Don’t print that, son. lf his mama reads that, she’s just gonna lose all hope.”
Of course with Steve Fosset it is no laughing matter- his wife recently had him declared dead. By the way Greg, I thought I had recently read that his wife said it was basically a joyride he was on- that he was not doing reconnaisance for a land speed record as had been originally reported.

It is an interesting, but dubious story.
There’s a part where this guy tells that Fosset told him during a phone conversation, that he had taken some UFO investigator to see this weird inter-dimensional “portal”, but that neither of them had had the courage to step inside it.
So, who was this UFO investigator?

Richelle,
Yes, that’s what I thought. Just a pretty good tale that could be kicked around on C2C and the internet.
I wonder if they found any bodies in the old plane wrecks? Being who he was, Perhaps Fossett’s misadventure was the only one that was followed up with more effort.

Ben,
Interesting news. It seems that we have two stories now, both believable. He could have crashed doing either activity, although a “joyride” may be more plausible since he may not have been keeping as careful a watch on his altitiude or fuel, etc. Even the most experienced pilots can make mistakes.
There is also the possibility that his wife is covering up something, perhaps to save his reputation or discourage people like this “M” from spreading rumors, or both.

As funny as it sounds Ed Dames (or was it SDM, I get them confused) knows where he is and that he isn’t dead. If I remember right he was suggesting that Fossett had been captured and taken to some underground base. Yeah, on c2c.
February 29th, 2008 at 11:14 am
I know Ed Dames said on C2C that he was 100% certain Fossett was dead, and he gave specific coordinates where his plane was likely to be found, and was going to send out his own search team (!) But Morton may have described the underground base scenario.
February 29th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
You are right, now that you said that I remember Dames saying that. So it must have been SDM.
He is always going to send that search team and they either never go or never find anything.

Wow that is interesting!
But I got to say: whenever I hear someone say “I don’t want media attention” And its got big media attention, I have to wonder when the book or movie is coming out.

I find it sad and curious that no flight plan was filed. Such a simple act, left undone, that could have, if not saved his life, might have at least given investigators a clue as to where to find his body, so his family could have closure.
The story–oh, it sounds like someone is having fun with a tragic event. Which is also sad, but also part of the Fortean experience.
It sounds rather like a variant on the good folk who live underground or the Shaver mystery. Or the little people that the Native Americans said lived underground and sometimes kidnapped people–the Rock Babies, I think they are popularly called in English.
I do feel sad for his wife, though–first losing her husband and then having these weird rumors fly. I know it would push my temper a bit were I she.
