It actually seemed pretty organized and peaceful this year. The crowds were not oppressive, and although there were the expected glitches, visitors didn’t really notice. We went to the airshow on Saturday afternoon, which was my only guilty pleasure away from the convention.

No time for those cute little bats this trip, although I have seen a lot of them around street lights, eating the mosquitoes which I don’t think are cute at all.

Perhaps that’s what made Nick heat up.

Nick’s been fine for the rest of convention. I never saw him without a bottle of water, even at night.

I’m almost glad I didn’t make it out there this year, not becuase of the oppressive heat or the unwieldy anniversary crowd, but because of the fact that it began on July 5th. I’ve been to Roswell for the past several years and it’s a festival that always ended with the parade and the fireworks display on the fourth. Pushing it to the weekend like this makes the experience much less the small-town-spooked-by -aliens Americana experience and more of a hyped up, mass produced thing. Different aspects of American madness, I suppose.

I met Roy Thinnes at one of the Roswell events. We watched several episodes of the old Invaders show and I explained to him how Fred Crisman thought the show was based on his life. So this weekend I have a VHS copy of the first epsiode of Invaders that I plan to watch in honor of Roswell, and I’ll raise a glass to you guys while I’m doing so.

If you haven’t gone to the science museum in Alamogordo, let me tell you it’s worth the drive. Too bad they only allow visitors to the Trinity site in April and October. And I know you’re catching the running of the bats at Carlsbad, right?

I knew it would be really hot there because it has been really hot here and it always seems to be 10 degrees hotter there.
