Roswell UFO Festival: Day 1
We’re on a hotel on main street here in Roswell. Our first day was full of meeting old friends and forgetting that we occasionally disagree with them on important aspects of the UFO phenomenon, and how it doesn’t really matter that much.
Nick and I met in the Albuquerque Airport and were shuttled down to Roswell with John Greenewald, my girlfriend Sigrid, and actress Chase Masterson. Nick nearly had a heat stroke episode in the unairconditioned van, fearlessly piloted by our new friend Pete, who was comandeered by the local authorities to use his own vehicle, which was otherwise quite roomy. Cold drinks were provided.
Due to an oversight (?) at the car rental place, I got a damn LINCOLN TOWN CAR to use while here. Sweet.
After things were all sorted out, Adam Gorightly was our speaker’s table partner, selling our miserable books to unsuspecting festival-goers. People don’t want to purchase copies of the Excluded Middle anothology, but for some reason they stop by and touch the cover like it’s some kind of religious icon. They don’t even open it. I should charge for that.
We met a man who claims to have worked for the NSA, decrypting Soviet transmissions during the cold war. I half-expected him to stand up and shout “WRONNNG!” during my presentation on “Project Beta,” but he was cool. While walking over to see Nick’s talk, he proved his bona-fides to me by off-handedly remarking “You know, spies are kind of weird people.” Indeed.
Nick’s talk on “Bodysnatchers In The Desert” was generally well-recieved (surprise), but one audience member brought up the recent release of the Walter Haut “death-bed” statement. All too frequently, many will let belief systems get in the way of their hearing. Accusing Nick of not taking the document seriously, Redfern had to repeat that he actually did take it seriously, but the reference to “bodies” was not clear enough to fully confirm that they were non-human in origin.
A final word from Nick: “This weather sucks. More rain would be nice.”

Tell Nick to drink lots and lots of water! I can’t believe you made that drive in a van with no AC!
I knew it would be really hot there because it has been really hot here and it always seems to be 10 degrees hotter there.
Thanks for the update! The news coverage has sucked.

Well, on the plus side, at least you got to share a van with Chase Masterson

hey Greg!
I’m almost glad I didn’t make it out there this year, not becuase of the oppressive heat or the unwieldy anniversary crowd, but because of the fact that it began on July 5th. I’ve been to Roswell for the past several years and it’s a festival that always ended with the parade and the fireworks display on the fourth. Pushing it to the weekend like this makes the experience much less the small-town-spooked-by -aliens Americana experience and more of a hyped up, mass produced thing. Different aspects of American madness, I suppose.
I met Roy Thinnes at one of the Roswell events. We watched several episodes of the old Invaders show and I explained to him how Fred Crisman thought the show was based on his life. So this weekend I have a VHS copy of the first epsiode of Invaders that I plan to watch in honor of Roswell, and I’ll raise a glass to you guys while I’m doing so.
Best,
kt
oh, and –
If you haven’t gone to the science museum in Alamogordo, let me tell you it’s worth the drive. Too bad they only allow visitors to the Trinity site in April and October. And I know you’re catching the running of the bats at Carlsbad, right?

Lesley,
Nick’s been fine for the rest of convention. I never saw him without a bottle of water, even at night.

uv777bk,
Perhaps that’s what made Nick heat up.

Kenn,
It actually seemed pretty organized and peaceful this year. The crowds were not oppressive, and although there were the expected glitches, visitors didn’t really notice. We went to the airshow on Saturday afternoon, which was my only guilty pleasure away from the convention.
No time for those cute little bats this trip, although I have seen a lot of them around street lights, eating the mosquitoes which I don’t think are cute at all.
