Off To Roswell
I will be leaving for Roswell presently, and will again attempt to write reports from the scene. Just like last year, there are actually two conventions/ festivals going on. The City of Roswell is presenting a slate of speakers including Richard and Karyn Dolan, Farah Yurdozu, abduction researcher John Carpenter, Roswell mainstay Dennis Balthaser, Dark Mission co-author Mike Bara and Italian UFO journalist Paola Harris. The MC will be the enthusiastic and talented Peter Robbins, co-author of Left at East Gate. I will be speaking at 10 AM on Saturday. If you plan to be there, stop by and say hello.
The UFO Museum is doing it’s own thing again with Steven Bassett, Tom Cary, Diana Perla Chapa, Victor Comacho, Stanton Friedman, Ron Regehr, Don Schmidt, Derrel Simms, Yvonne Smith, Fernando Telles, Noe Torres and Victor Uriarte. One surprise on the slate is a guest who has little or no connection to UFOs: Keir Dullea, who played astronaut Dave Bowman in Stanley Kubrick’s 1969 film adaptation of 2001, A Space Odyssey. I’m bringing a piece of 2001 memorabilia for him to sign.
I know that a lot of you have varying opinions about UFO conventions and festivals, and the effect they may have on the public view of the pheomenon, but Roswell is still the “Woodstock” of the festival circuit. It’s the 5 ton elephant that you can’t ignore, standing in the middle of the party. It’s also fun, which I know isn’t allowed in some quarters.
If it weren’t for Bill Moore, Stanton Friedman, and Charles Berlitz, we might not be talking about all this now, whether there is any evidence left for a UFO crash or not. Their 1979 book, The Roswell Incident gave us a catchphrase and started a cultural phenomenon.

Have fun, dude

PS: But I’ve just notice you made a mistake.
Keir Dullea played David Bowman, while the other guy played Frank Poole. Frank Bowman would have been their offspring, and that would have resulted in a much weirder “2001″ movie

RPJ,
Dammit! You’re right! HAL 9000 did not say “What are you doing, Frank?”
Corrected, and thank you.

What do you think about Karl Pflock’s book “Roswell”?

misteranderson,
Never read it. I liked the title “Inconvenient Facts and the Will to Believe.” He told me about it at the 1997 Roswell conference, but never sent a copy as promised. He did help a lot with contacts for interviews when I was writing “Project Beta.” Don’t know if I agree with him all that much, but knowing that, he still offered his assistance.
