“New” Ufology

When Nick and I signed up to do this blog, I thought we would be deflecting the slings and arrows of the old ufological guard, believers (which are often in the same group) on the one hand, and skeptics (actually Fundamentalist Skeptics - which I am trying to copyright as a term ;) ) on the other.

Reading the comments over the past week, I am more than pleasantly surprised at the thoughtful commentary we have received. As Paul Kimball has said many times at his excellent blog, maybe this is the time for a new kind of look at the subject. The “new” look seems to combine ideas proposed mainly by Jacques Vallee and John Keel, but also includes the theories of such writers as Keith Thompson, Greg Little, Salvador Frexeido, Whitley Strieber, Jim Martin, and John Mack. We also seem to reserve respect for many others who are firmly in the “nuts-and bolts” camp like Josef A. Hynek, James Mac Donald, Jerome Clark, Paul Hill, Donald Keyhoe, and countless others as the shoulders of those we stand on.

Where this is headed, I don’t know, but like many of you, I am tired of reading more accounts of sightings and encounters. It’s time to ask again where these things come from and how our minds process the experience to answer the biggest question of all. What we will find I think, is that there are multiple reasons for why we have put them in the “extraterrestrial” category with almost no real proof of this other than our expectations. There is almost certainly an “other” consciousness trying to interact with us, but the nature of that interaction still waits to be explained.

  1. Raven Says:

In one of Vallee’s books he said that because of the great diversity of experiences his research had uncovered over the years, if “all” the UFO phenomenon turned out to be was just aliens from other planets he would be very disappointed. That insight appears more and more on the mark as the years have passed.

The Ufological field is much like the parable of the man who mad a claim on some land with the expectation of finding a large gold strike on it. So he spends many years searching, digging and panning, uncovering the occasional nugget here and there, but never “the big strike.” After wasting away his money and his life in a fruitless search he sells the land for pennies on the dollar and abandons his dream, a broken, bitter and frustrated man.

The new owner, however, has purchased the land because he sees the diamonds, the emeralds the silver, and all of the other precious stones and metals with which the land is overflowing; wealth beyond measure that the original own walked right past every day because his focus was so set on gold that he missed all the rest that literally surrounded him.

I believe the UFO field has genuine gold, but there is also silver, platinum and precious gems of all descriptions. It only requires us to keep our eyes (and minds) open so that we don’t pass them by in a myopic search for just one thing.

Merry Christmas to all, and Happy Anything Else you may be celebrating at this season!

Raven, same back at ya and you’re right on the mark with your parable. We gots ta come up with new ways to dig up the gold, and maybe even see things we didn’t think were gold before.
