Donald Keyhoe and Lili St Cyr on UFOs

The University of Texas at Austin has just posted 65 transcripts, audio and videos of the Mike Wallace Interview program from 1957 and 1958. Wallace donated the materials to the Harry Ransom Center at the University and has allowed them to be available for free viewing and download.

Of interest to our readers is an interview with NICAP co-founder Major Donald Keyhoe from March 8, 1958. This was less than two months after his famous Armstrong Circle Theater appearance when Keyhoe’s audio was cut off just as he was about to say that he could prove that UFOs were “under intelligent control.” It becomes evident reading through the transcript that we are no further along in either official disclosure or methods to force such an event when familiar exchanges like this still take place:

WALLACE: Major Keyhoe, I understand you have three new reports on file which in your opinion… you have them currently on file, they’re new reports. These, in your opinion, would convince every person in this country that flying saucers are a fact. Is that correct?

KEYHOE: It should convince a lot of people because of the names involved.

WALLACE: Tell us about it.

KEYHOE: I told your interviewer or in Washington that I couldn’t mention the names because they were too high; one of them is a top scientist in this country, whose name would be known to everybody.

WALLACE: But, why wouldn’t he want his…?

KEYHOE: Because he’s afraid of official ridicule.

WALLACE: He’s afraid of official ridicule?

KEYHOE: That’s right.

Do any readers know which documents he is talking about? Were they ever released?

Strangely, flying saucers are brought up on one other occasion in another interview, this time with Lili St Cyr, the most famous stripper of the time and later president of her own lingerie company! She apparently believed that the space people lived on Venus:

St. CYR: These people are obviously more advanced than we are. So they must be more advanced in their emotions and more civilized than we are.

WALLACE: You really believe in the fact of flying saucers and the fact that they originate, not here on earth, in Russia, or in the United States, or any place, but rather in other planets?

St. CYR: They can be born on their own planet, of course. But I believe they exist and that they are seen, there have been many sightings and their manner of flying indicates that they’re many, many years ahead of us.

    Parliament, it’s the best….according to Mike Wallace…

  2. crgintx Says:

Lili St. Cyr was definitely worth the trip from Venus if you’re into blond’s. I don’t know if she was crazy or the victim of some intel type who used the “I’m an alien fron Venus” strategy to woo her. Ever wonder why the UFO-nauts seem to gravitate to the beautiful but crazy types? They don’t seem to be contacting or abducting old college professors.

    Greg:

    Imagine the exchange this way:

“WALLACE: Major Keyhoe, I understand you have three new reports on file which in your opinion… you have them currently on file, they’re new reports. These, in your opinion, would convince every person in this country that flying saucers are a fact. Is that correct?

STEVEN GREER: It should convince a lot of people because of the names involved.

    WALLACE: Tell us about it.

STEVEN GREER: I told your interviewer or in Washington that I couldn’t mention the names because they were too high; one of them is a top scientist in this country, whose name would be known to everybody.

WALLACE: But, why wouldn’t he want his…?

STEVEN GREER: Because he’s afraid of official ridicule.

WALLACE: He’s afraid of official ridicule?

    STEVEN GREER: That’s right.”

One could indeed make the case that not much has changed… not just from the media’s perspective, however, but from ufology’s as well.

    * Of course, Wallace would have said “Dr. Greer”, not “Major Keyhoe”, in my version. ;-)

  5. Greg Bishop Says:

    Crg,

I don’t know if St. Cyr was “crazy,” but she seemed to have been open to some strange possibilities. Also, college professors would be disinclined to voice these kind of opinions, I would think.

  6. Greg Bishop Says:

    Paul,

I played a bit of the audio from Bill Moore’s 1989 MUFON speech tonight on the show, and what he said about some UFO researchers and their interactions still holds true today, almost 20 years later.

  7. red pill junkie Says:

I wonder who that scientist was…

Oh! and that Lili St Cyr sure provokes a lot of Venus-related thoughts in my mind. YOWZA! :-)
