Hippies and UFOs
Cover of a UFO-themed 1960s British magazine (the image was also used in issue #1 of my old ‘zine, The Excluded Middle.)
Veteran Fortean writer/ researcher Andy Roberts has written a fun piece for Fortean Times on the influence of the UFO culture on the hippie culture in the UK. Coming of age during the punk/ new wave era, I have some disdain for some of the popular forms of the hippie movement, but there is no denying that some of the ideas and activism of the era forever changed western society. I even listen to some of the music.
Roberts compares the 1950s brand of UFOculture to the forms that were forged in the mid-to late 1960s. This line in particular could have been written for our own blog:
A new meaning for flying saucers was being forged, and to the Underground this blend of saucers, sacred sites and mythology was a damn sight more interesting than the nuts-and-bolts, sci-fi derived vision of the UFO orthodoxy.
The more things change, the more they remain the same (unfortunately.)
