Flying Saucer Music #7

Little Space Girl Cover

This song reminds me of a t-shirt that abductee artist David Huggins used to wear which was emblazoned with the words “Miscengenation Is Great!” Huggins claims multiple sexual liaisons with Playboy-type women with bubble-eyed alien heads, which he has depicted in scores of paintings.

From the Rockabilly Europe site:

Jesse Lee Turner had a strong rock ‘n’ roll voice, with an Elvis-like quiver. Unfortunately, this side of Turner can be heard on only a few of his discs. He had the misfortune that his only hit was a novelty number and that fact kept haunting him for the rest of his recording career. Jesse Lee was hired as Jerry Lee Lewis’ driver in 1957. Turner’s career as a recording artist zoomed into orbit with his first real release. At a time when witch doctors, purple people eaters and chipmunks were all over the charts, a song about another alien from outer space, “The Little Space Girl” looked like a good commercial bet. “The Little Space Girl”, featuring the Chipmunk-like voice of Paul Belin, a Texas deejay, was written by Jesse Lee’s cousin Floyd Robinson, though Turner was inadvertently credited as the writer. It came out in December 1958 and was picked by Billboard as a “Spotlight winner of the week”. By February 1959, it had reached #20 on the Billboard charts.

Yet more evidence for my Chipmunk/ alien conspiracy theory. None may dispute me now.

  1. Butterfly Says:

Listening to this stirred long-forgotten memories of a different novelty record that my mother used to play for me back-to-back with The Chipmunks/Ragtime Cowboy Joe. (I’m giving my age away now!) I went away to dredge the old memory banks and came up with the flip side of a record called “Makin’ Love” by none other than Floyd Robinson. The flip side was called “My Girl” and had the exact same rhythm to the lyrics.

By the way, I hope you realise that your conspiracy theory makes David Seville one of the mainstays of the contactee movement! ;)

    Butterfly,

I haven’t heard the Chipmunks verson of “Ragtime Cowboy Joe,” but I’m still looking. I do have a couple of others, one by the Sons Of The Pioneers.

David Seville is the parroting puppet of Ross Bagdasarian, who “invented” the Chipmunks, or rather, grew them in vats of nutrient-rich fluids!

  3. Richelle Hawks Says:

Oh Lord, the sight of those hard yellow records always gives me flashbacks.

    Richelle,

I still have some old Disney 45s on yellow vinyl. Too bad there aren’t colored CDs, although I do have some black ones.
