Alien Writing - Pt. 2

Continued from part 1.

Someone out there has been writing us letters for a long time. Strange symbols and printed languages turn up regularly in UFO encounter experiences. Police officer Lonnie Zamora glimpsed a strange crescent-and-arrow type design on the side of an egg-shaped craft at Soccorro, New Mexico in 1964.The account of Jesse Marcel, Jr. includes pieces of wreckage that his father, Major Jesse Marcel, brought home to Roswell in the early morning hours of July 8, 1947 inscribed with symbolic writing that, if genuine, bears little comparison to earthly communication.

Marcel Symbols

Jesse Marcel, Jr.’s drawing of Roswell wreckage symbols.

“Alien writing” can literally change history. The Mormon faith is based on translations of strangely engraved golden plates that founder Joseph Smith claimed to have dug up after a divine visitation in 1823. As for the authenticity of “mentally received” messages, there is reason to believe that at least some of the symbols and symbol systems described do not originate from the psyche of the participants.

One of the difficulties in verifying the authenticity of an alien script is that if it resembles an earthly language or known terrestrial symbols, is it necessarily a “true” one? Perhaps the reason for this is that all input into a human consciousness is filtered through an individual’s learning, experience, culture, and prejudice, and the messages must necessarily be rendered in a form that is understandable to the receiver as well as others. The flipside of this reasoning is the obvious possibility that the receiver might be delusional, hallucinating, or simply hoaxing the account. While it takes little skill to devise an alphabet with a one-to-one relationship to the experiencer’s native language, a representational pictorial symbol system or one with no discernible grammar or syntax (at least one which seems to possess an internal logic) is more difficult to fake.

Humans receive alien writing in many ways. Some say that the symbols come from “angels” or “teachers.” By far the most common method of reception is by “channeling,” but the messages can also be the result of a close encounter wherein the participant sees and remembers symbols or languages shown to him while wandering about inside (or inside what is perceived to be) an extraterrestrial craft. An early example is the case of Herbert Schirmer, who in 1967 claimed to have been taken aboard a ship near Ashland, Nebraska. On the uniforms of the beings he encountered was a symbol that resembled a winged serpent. This theme is obviously not exclusively extraterrestrial, as it was known to the Greeks and Romans, as “dragons” in Chinese and European lore, as well as to the new world cultures of Central and South America. There is the possibility that Schirmer may have incorporated it (consciously or not) into his account. An interesting sidelight is the fact that the Mayan culture held the belief that Quetzelcoatl, the feathered serpent, had taught and bequeathed to man a system of pictorial writing.

Dr. Mario Pazzaglini made a 16 year study of examples and possible sources of alien writing, and chronicled them in his book, Symbolic Messages. He collected hundreds of samples and classified them into distinct categories: 1) Alphabetic–consisting of 20-30 symbols, where each symbol is a consonant or vowel; 2) Syllabic–usually 50-60 symbols, where each symbol represents a consonant/vowel combination; 3) Ideographic–Usually 500-600 symbols, where each symbol represents an idea or word; and 4) Symbols–Consisting of single and complex insignia types. These categories must necessarily derive from a human understanding of representational visual systems, and in fact most claimed alien writing examples fall into these categories.

AuI

aUI language taught to John Weilgart (he claimed) by spacemen.

Pazzaglini conducted a limited experiment wherein participants were asked to conceive their own “alien language.” The results without exception showed that, left to their own devices, people tend to concoct alien alphabets that bear a one-to-one relationship to their native language.

In the realm of the written word, one of the earliest concrete examples of what was purported to be an extra-human communication was channeled by medium Edward Kelley and his boss, Elizabethan Court Astrologer and all-around magician John Dee, from 1582 to 1589. Dee said that an “angel” had dictated to him (through Kelley) a system of symbols to be used in a ceremonial context, and would provide the user with a higher understanding of magical and alchemical concepts than human-based writing. The system was called “Enochian,” and is still in use by occult practitioners today.

Enochian

Enochian symbols.

It communicates concepts through the juxtaposition of symbols and their relationships to each other, and does not appear to be derived from any written language. Enochian is claimed among its adherents to affect the reader/ user on important subconscious levels as well. This aspect of alien writing has also been mentioned by UFO contactees and abductees.

Pazzaglini script

Alien writing channeled by Pazzaglini.

Pazzaglini’s own alien writing doesn’t resemble anything else that UFO witnesses have reported, with one exception. There seems to be a spiritual, if not graphic kinship with the scribblings of Betty Anderasson and her family, and this may explain the fascination he had with this case. Andreasson, whose abduction experiences were chronicled in the Andreasson Affair books by Raymond Fowler, has produced hundreds of pages of a cursive script that almost defies analysis. After comparing Andreasson’s drawings to various medieval alchemical symbols, Pazzaglini was able to translate one possible sentence out of hundreds. It read: “If you want to make light solid, show it to the moon.” While this probably makes little practical sense, it does make for a beautiful sort of poetry.

Pazzaglini once told me that he was in contact with leading abduction researchers who promised to send him examples of alien symbols, but he never got them. Perhaps it was because they wanted to keep the symbols secret to verify the authenticity of future claims, or maybe it was simply their egos getting in the way. Another study of alien writing has yet to be published, which is unfortunate. Pazzaglini had to self-publish his own monograph. Admittedly, the study of alien writing would make little sense to a publisher with an eye on the bottom line, but as a contribution to an understanding of extra-human experience, it should be welcomed.

  1. Greg Taylor Says:

    Hi Greg,

Wonderful essay, and along the lines of some recent research I’ve been doing (so much more eloquent than I could wish to write though).

Harking back to another topic mentioned lately here on UFO Mystic: the DMT experience quite often throws up language/alphabets as of vital importance. McKenna mentioned the ‘logos’, and I’ve heard of a number of trips in which ‘glyphs’ of some description were presented to the experiencer. On some occasions, these glyphs have been given significance as being vitally important to ‘creating’ or maintaining our reality/universe/call it what you will.

    Kind regards,
    Greg

  2. Greg Bishop Says:

    Greg,

I’m glad you enjoyed the post. It seems that not too many people are interested in this aspect of the UFO subject. I of course think it’s vitally important to our understanding of what this “other” could be.

What sort of issues have you uncovered on “received” writing? I’d really be interested to know!

  3. Greg Taylor Says:

    Hi Greg,

Sorry, busy day today - my oldest girl’s first day at school! So just a few things to throw your way at the moment, on the entheogen front:

McKenna on the language component of hallucinogenic experiences (mainly talking DMT and psilocybin):

“This hallucinogen induced phenomenon isn’t like that; it’s simply a brain state that allows the expression of the assembly language that lies behind language, or a primal language of the sort that Robert Graves discussed in The White Goddess, or a Kabbalistic language of the sort that is described in the Zohar, a primal “ur sprach” that comes out of oneself.”

On DMT experiences with ‘glyph’ elements - what I find very interesting is a common thread of how these glyphs or runes are like the assembly language/building blocks of reality (relating this to McKenna’s quote above). This is an experience I can personally relate to (nudge wink):

    * “Similar visions from previous experiences, being in some sort of neon hypercube room, maybe in a castle of some sort, walls pulsing and glowing, with intricate detailed hieroglyphics and op-art style patterns. A sense of some sort of entities there, showing me things.”

    * “The toilet bowl was crawling with mysterious interlocking hieroglyphs that seemed to be the keys to the universe.”

    * ” It was like a fantasy alphabet, a cross between runes and Russian or Arabic writing. It felt like there was some internal link information in it, like it was data. It wasn’t just random. Like seeing panels with a cut-out shape, rounded edges, hieroglyphics of some sort.”

    * “The white room consisted mostly of internal linklight and space. There were internal linkcubes stacked with icons on the surfaces, like a Logos of consciousness.”

” I burst into its main chamber. [...] I dont know if it’s because of my interest in computers or not, but it seems like it’s the raw bits of reality. It’s a lot more than only ones and internal linkzeros. It’s a higher level, very potent bits.”

    * “Then black lines faded into view on the surface of the tube and began to move and rearrange themselves in ordered vertical and horizontal registers and in chaotic spirals and zig-zags. Very often strings of almost recognisable numbers and letters would appear, but just as frequently I would see sections of script from languages that were completely unknown to me - sometimes expressed in what looked like hieroglyphs, picture writing or signs. Constantly shifting, sorting and juggling like a computer programme running through a thousand different alphabets in an instant.” (Author Graham Hancock’s account in ‘Supernatural’)

    * “I found myself in a white room of sorts, in which was a pile of Escher cubes. At the meeting point of the cubes was what appeared to be a thick fan, which was eternally fanning out from the central point. On the edge of this fan were what I would call ‘runes’, although I didn’t recognise what language they were in. At that point I had the thought ‘pop’ into my head, “This is how we create reality”.

I have some other research on ufological/paranormal phenomenology that I’d enjoy you taking a look over and giving me some opinions on. If you’re interested, send me an email (my first name, at dailygrail.com).

    Kind regards,
    Greg

  4. Greg Bishop Says:

    Greg,

    Great observations. Truly informative!

When I read these accounts, it reinforces my suspicion that reality and the universe, although infinite and not locked into our version of time flow, is accessible at any time to those with the tools or state of mind to do so. We are hypnotized by our senses and beliefs.

    I’ll send you an email.

    Thanks again.

  5. BoyintheMachine Says:

    To Greg Taylor:

“Harking back to another topic mentioned lately here on UFO Mystic: the DMT experience…”

By DMT are you refering to the elf-seeing drug?

  6. Greg Taylor Says:

BitM: yes, dimethyltryptamine. Of Terence McKenna and Rick Strassman fame. The ‘elf’ bit is a controversial topic though, with many people arguing for it, others arguing that it’s all ‘overlay’ from McKenna’s “machine elves” comment, which didn’t actually reference the usual vision of elves.

    Kind regards,
    Greg

  7. Rahaza Says:

Several years ago our family went to an expo on UFO’s in Minniapolis, MN. I was intrigued by everything there but especially by mysterious writing apparently left by a(n) UFO. I copied the symbols from the information and have had it all these years and recently came across these writings again and was hoping that if I send a couple digital pictures maybe you can tell me more about the circumstances reagarding the writing. I’m not at all a(n) UFO buff but I am interested in the history of this particlar writing. Thank you for your tiem. Rahaza

  8. not_anonymous Says:

Does anyone have any sense of how many copies of Symbolic Messages Pazzaglini published? I’ve had the various used book sites searching for a copy for a while now with no luck. Does anyone know who presently holds the copyright? It would be great if the copyright holder could be convinced to get hooked up with a Print-On-Demand type of publisher. If anyone has a copy they would like to sell I would be most interested.

  9. Greg Bishop Says:

    Rahaza,

Sorry, but I don’t often see comments that are posted more than a week or so after the original post. If you would still like to send along the writing sample I can take a look. Although I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to identify it, At least I may know how to categorize it and possibly ascertain whether it might be “genuine” or not.

  10. Greg Bishop Says:

    “not anonymous,”

I know the fellow who essentially holds the copyright and can ask him whether this would be possible. Good idea!

  11. not_anonymous Says:

Lulu.com is one such on demand publisher that I have purchased books from. My understanding is that it essentially costs the owner nothing to sell a book through them. The only costs involved would be the time and labour involved in digitizing the book to create a PDF. I might even volunteer to do so in exchange for a free copy if the guy doesn’t have the skills or can’t find anyone else to do it. As this is something of a specialist book I’d have no problem paying extra for a larger format, color photos and quality binding.

  12. Greg Bishop Says:

There are no color images in the book. I’ll try and find the guy’s number and ask about this. Thanks for the offer!

  13. David Griffin Says:

It’s interesting that having spoken to many people who have tried the DeMenTed experience - there is general agreement is it “alien” in a kind of meta sense but the entities of McKenna [elves] and Strassman [greys?] didn’t always crop up as regularly as you’d have thought given what those two rather good re-searchers have written/described. McKenna’s line “you get elves, everyone does” certainly seems not to be the case if we’re going on a literal trip here…

Anyone got an audio with Mario? I just re-located the Disinfo DVD interview that has him discussing this - but there are also a couple of radio shows I understand - I can’t find the files anywhere. Pls email me if you have stuff… exo.pol@gmail.com - ta.

  14. David Griffin Says:

Greg - i’m stealing this for my site. I will link back. Shout if this annoys you. Cheers, davID

  15. Greg Bishop Says:

    David,

The only thing I have at hand is the full interview I did with Mario back in 1997, which is printed in the Excluded Middle anthology entitled “Wake Up Down There!” you can get it on Amazon or from me if you like. I won’t charge shipping!

I may have the original telephone recording of the inerview somewhere in my files.

  16. David Griffin Says:

Found it on Amazon uk: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wake-Up-Down-There-Collection/dp/0932813828/ref=sr_1_1/026-8820021-3496414?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1186309554&sr=8-1
    -
I’ve ordered that and Project Beta. If it’s OK with you I’ll email you and see if we can arrange a file transfer for the audio if you manage to locate it.
    -

  17. David Griffin Says:

I found it on Amazon UK. I think it’d cost you as much to send it over here as Amazon anyway.
    -
Once it has arrived maybe I can get in touch with you and see if we can arrange a file transfer if you find the audio. Be quite a scoop to have that as well :)
    -

  18. David Griffin Says:

The other audio with Mario is by Bob Hieronymous who does 21st Century Radio. Anyone found that pls let me know.
