Aussie Saucer Spying

In 2006, Anomalist Books published my most recent UFO book: On the Trail of the Saucer Spies: UFOs and Government Surveillance.
The book told the strange story of how numerous intelligence agencies in both the UK and the US have been secretly spying on UFO researchers for decades.
And now we have further evidence of such secret surveillance - this time from Australia.
A file that originated with the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) has been declassified and details the strange saga of how, and why, Australian spooks and spies kept watch on elements of the nation’s UFO research community for years.
The 42-page file is full of data that ranges from the strange and the esoteric, to the hilarious and the sinister.
Here is the link to the ASIO file in question.
As I pointed out in On the Trail of the Saucer Spies, much of the surveillance of UFO researchers in the UK and the US has primarily been undertaken as a result of the fact that official agencies have expressed concern that certain ufologists may be (A) tied with hostile, overseas intelligence agencies; or (B) linked with protest groups viewed in some official quarters as being subversive.
And the ASIO file tell a similar story and contains a wealth of data on (A) Australian Flying Saucer groups; (B) communist-related concerns; (C) fears of cleared military personnel and non-military civilians with secret clearances becoming involved with groups; (D) leaks of security data; (E) Eastern European individuals; and (F) even issues pertaining to vegetarianism and nudism!
As I have said before, there is now overwhelming evidence that, as a community, we are being watched. But it’s not always for the reasons that we initially assume…

There’s a rally interesting spanish movie called “Platillos Volantes” (Flying Saucers) that deals with an actual real case, of two men that, way back in the 70’s and before Heaven’s Gate, committed suicide (in a rather shocking way) because they were certain the occupants of the Flying Saucers would re-incarnate them on their planet. Among the things deaalt in the film, at one time the two men were being spied and afterward captured by the spanish Civil Guard along with some communist activists (these were Franco’s time after all); they torture them and question them, not because they thought they had knowledge of alien invasions, but thinking they were political provocateurs or terrorists, only to discover they are harmless UFO buffs who had joined the communists because they were the only ones willing to listen things like “brotherly love between all mankind”, and things like that. A good movie I should advise you to watch if you have the chance, you might find to your dismay you have some things in common with those two characters

RPJ: I’ll definitely see if I can get a hold of that!
The new file basically backs up everything that I published in “On the Trail of the Saucer Spies” - namely that there is very strong evidence of Intel interest in UFOs.
However, that interest largely relates to concerns that our UFO research is a cover for other, subversive activity.
Even though I was taken to task by some when the book was published, the Oz files just reinforce that notion even more.

hi Nick, the ASIO file has been know about for quite some time and it has been up on the National Archives of Australia web site as a viewable file since at least early 2006.
What it shows is the ufo community was targeted like a whole lot of other diverse communities, all because of largely innocent flirtations with matters that fell within the paranoia of intelligence organisations. It didn’t take much to fall within this net, and very rarely did it have anything to do with the UFO phenomenon itself.

Good to hear from you. Yep, I totally agree: that was what I found while researching my “On the Trail of the Saucer Spies” book - that seldom did the surveillance actually have anything directly to do with UFOs, but was largely linked with political related issues.

Nick,
I’ve put a detailed article up on my UFOIC blog site which addresses the ASIO UFO file: “Ufologists Defiled? UFOIC, ASIO and alien McCarthyism”: http://ufoicaustralia.blogspot.com
There is also a mention on my main blog:
