UK Animal Mutilations

A couple of days ago someone emailed me and asked if Britain was home to cattle and animal mutilation reports and incidents that were similar to those which have been reported from the United States in the last forty years?

Well…we certainly do get reports of animals mutilated in a distinctly sinister fashion in the UK. My book On the Trail of the Saucer Spies discusses such cases, as does Jonathan Downes’ The Owlman and Others.

But whereas in the US theories for such events usually focus their attentions on aliens and clandestine military-related bio-warfare activity, in the UK the incidents are generally perceived as being the work of the archetypal “Satanic Cult.”

Nevertheless, since such reports most assuredly do exist; and the inquiring e-mailer that brought the question up is a regular reader of this blog, I figured it would be a good time to reveal a couple of relatively recent reports that may be of interest.

In October 2005, farmer Daniel Alford of Sampford Spiney, near Tavistock, Devon, England made a shocking discovery on the wilds of Dartmoor: namely, six sheep, horrifically slaughtered, with their eyeballs removed and their necks viciously broken. More sinister is the fact that the corpses of the animals had been deliberately laid out in the form of a Pagan symbol near a series of ancient standing-stones.

Alford was convinced that this was the work of occultists – primarily because this was not the first occasion upon which he had made such a gruesome find. In January 2005, he had stumbled upon five sheep, killed in a similar fashion and spread out in a circle, only half a mile away. Interestingly, on both occasions the animal attacks had occurred at the height of a full moon.

Alford said at the time: “This was a sacrifice – they had their necks broken. Initially, when you think of sacrifices you think sharp knives and slit throats. That wasn’t the case here. If they had killed them and taken them, I would have accepted it more. Just to outright kill them and leave them is just a waste.”

And as Alford perceptively noted: “You wouldn’t just get kids catching sheep like that. Someone’s got to know what they’re on about.” Alford was not wrong: somebody most definitely did know what they were doing, and the attacks were set to continue.

In late June 2006, yet more strange sacrifices of sheep on Dartmoor occurred, again near Tavistock, and specifically on moorland at a location called Pork Hill. Once more, the necks of the animals had been broken, and their eyes had been taken. This time, however, the tongues of the animals had also been removed.

RSPCA [The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals] Inspector Becky Wadey commented: “These sheep must have been rounded up on the open moor by whoever carried out this barbaric attack. That would have required a number of people and potentially been quite a spectacle.”

Wadey added: “The bodies were found on open, exposed ground very close to the road, so somebody must have seen something, even if they did not realise at the time that it was suspicious.”

I still get strange reports of animal deaths in the UK from time to time and will keep you informed of any that I consider to be of particular interest.

  1. Greg Bishop Says:

In the U.S., it seems the only people who assign mutilations to satanists are some law enforcement officers, although Chris O’Brien thinks that this is an issue in a minority of cases he investigated in the San Luis Valley.

While there must be strangely killed animal cases all over the world, the sense that those in GB are blamed on cultists rather than weirder possibilities leaves me with some questions. The sheep mentioned here have their necks broken, the animals in the USA are met with “surgically precise methods” with no traces of blood left either in the animals or on the ground around them. The USA examples have organs removed and in some cases the “surgical methods” are questioned because of the type of incisions used, regarding the edges left on the flesh. There is no mention of surgical procedures or bloodless corpses or no blood in the surrounding area in the GB cases mentioned here. Why the comparison then?

  3. Nick Redfern Says:

I didn’t make a comparison. I pointed out that I had been asked the question (in paragraph one) about whether or not animal mutilations had occurred in the UK.

Then, in paragraphs two and three, I pointed out out that yes we get mutes, but that the perceived origin of the mutes in the two countries was very different.

Nowhere did I compare the two. I was merely making a post based on the questions posed by the emailer.

In fact, I don’t see how anyone can say I made comparisons; when, by revealing the undoubted “satanic” links in the UK cases, I was actually highlighting the differences between US and UK!

  4. galactus_westerberg Says:

    Just had a thought-

These mutilations, especially laid out in crude symbols, are sort of sinister refractions of the crop circle phenomena. Is it possible one phenom is mocking another phenom (sort of the way the Satanic Church inverts Christian symbols and practices), tit for tat?

I guess, a more direct question- is there any relationship between frequency of crop circles and animal mutilations in any given area?

If there is some odd ratio between events, you could conjecture one is used to stunt the efficacy of the other.

    Galactus:

This is an interesting question because it is an undoubted fact that some circles are made by people and a number of commentators have suggested that at least some of those human makers are following teachings of ancient British pagans. In fact, a friend of mine who made circles back in the 90s was once described as a “pagan anarchist.”
The motivations of at least some of the human circle makers is to invoke higher powers (not ET based) that seem to have magickal rites and issues at their base. You have now prompted me to write a piece on all this next week for the blog!

Mr.Redfern,I apologize if my initial opinion and question seemed to be a mere poke at your article. That is not the way it was intended to be by me.I am still curious if the UK cases had anymore parallels, than initially pointed out, with US cases. The US cases are truly puzzling, because of details I mentioned.I was not suggesting that you were comparing apples to oranges even though both are fruit.Again,I apologize.

    Skeptical:

No, no offense was taken at all - in fact, next week I’ll write a piece that goes into more detail re the differences (and 1 or 2 similarities) between the US and UK cases, as it’s an intriguing story that few outside the UK will probably know about, and which may raise some observations you’ll find interesting.

  12. Cold_Cathode Says:

On Monday evening, April 2, 2007, residents from the south side of Corpus Christi, Texas – especially those living on Stonemill Circle – met with a Corpus Christi Police Department representative to discuss the sad and disturbing mystery affecting their neighborhood since early November 2006 – the mutilation of house cats. Like so many other previous incidents of this terrible ongoing phenomena in the United States, Canada and England, the cats are found sliced bloodlessly in a variety of patterns and laid out in their owner’s yard with no tracks or signs of struggle.

Then first week of May 2007, the Sussex County, England, Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), reported to police that a cat in Park Close, Portslade, was found with its head, tail and two legs removed without blood. A Sussex Police spokesperson says there have been several similar cat mutilations in the past without any perpetrator being found and natural predators have been ruled out because of the precise tissue removal. Since May 2006, in West Sussex County, at least ten cats were found mutilated in Chichester, Burgess Hill and Haywards Health.
