The Secrets of Titan
The latest disclosures concerning the nature of Saturn’s moon, Titan, are certain to re-ignite the debate about whether or not life exists in our solar system - outside of our own planet, of course. Britain’s Nature magazine reveals that - thanks to the research of Ellen Stofan of Proxemy Research, Virginia, and University College, London - in many ways Titan is strikingly similar to our own world. It is the only moon in the solar system to possess such a dense atmosphere - and as with our own planet’s atmosphere, it is one rich in nitrogen.
Titan is also rich in methane gas, and scientists believe that Titan has what is known as a “methane cycle” - a system that is similar to the “water cycle” on Earth, in which liquid evaporates, cools, condenses, and then falls as rain, thereby helping to replenish the surface liquid.
If the similarities don’t end there and some form of life (rudimentary or otherwise) exists on Titan, this will be a matter of profound importance. This is a story that is only going to become more interesting.
