Dark Visitors: Puerto Rico’s Moca Vampire
In my post from several weeks ago entitled The Chupacabras: A Psychological Test Come To Life?, I mentioned the Moca Vampire of Puerto Rico. Again, in my more recent post Chupacabras Thoughts the Moca Vampire was mentioned by UFOmystic reader MindEcdysiast in regards to the eyewitness description of a giant bat.
With that, this post will be the first part of a multi-part post regarding the Moca Vampire.

Dark Visitors: Puerto Rico’s Moca Vampire
“You’re looking for what?â€
Perhaps telling the gas station attendant that I was on a quest to find of the ancestor of Puerto Rico’s Chupacabras hadn’t been one of my better ideas. The paranormal predator had caused enough damage in its short-lived range to cause the locals not to want to hear its name mentioned in jest. Yet here was someone looking for an even shadier entity, in fact, the traditional “scariest monster of them all†– the one that cannot be seen or felt, but whose trail of destruction is all too real and painful.
Waving vaguely in the direction of State Highway 2, the gas station attendant muttered something about a field off the side of a back road. Putting the rented car in gear, I headed down the country road with my photographer in search of the legendary Moca Vampire.
While Chupacabras was a humorous name bestowed upon the creature by comedian Silverio Pérez, it still carried an air of menace. Could the goatsucker suddenly change diet and go for people, becoming the Chupagente? But the Moca Vampire sounded more like a Halloween bakery confection employed to delight children, not frighten them. Yet during its year and a half long reign of terror, the unknown, unseen entity caused a sensation all over the world, despite being all but forgotten almost thirty years later.
The Vampire Awakens
Coinciding with the overwhelming number of cattle mutilations occurring in the United States and in the rest of the world at that time, Puerto Ricans discovered that their livestock was being slain by a mysterious, unseen assailant. They would have been even more distressed to learn that the same situation would replay itself twenty years later, courtesy of the ubiquitous Chupacabras.
In February 1975, a Puerto Rican newspaper ran one of the very first headlines concerning the wave of mysterious animal deaths to occur in the vicinity of the small town of Moca, on the island’s western side.
The entity, dubbed “The Moca Vampire” by the press, kicked off its killing spree in Barrio Rocha, a sector of the town of Moca, where it took the lives of a number of animals in a grisly manner never seen before. Fifteen cows, three goats, two geese and a pig were found dead with bizarre perforations on their hides, suggesting that a sharp instrument had been inserted into the hapless bovines. Autopsies showed that the animals had been thoroughly relieved of blood, as if consumed by some predator.
On March 7, 1975, a cow belonging to Rey Jiménez was found dead in Moca’s Barrio Cruz, presenting deep, piercing wounds on its skull and a number of scratches around the wounds on its body. Jiménez’s cow was added to the growing list of victims, which now totaled well over thirty.
As the number of victims grew, the Moca Vampire acquired an identity of its own, much in the same way that the Chupacabras would twenty years later. Speculation as to its nature was rife: many believed it was a supernatural “bird”, like the one seen by MarÃa Acevedo, a Moca resident who noticed that a strange animal had landed on her home’s zinc rooftop in the middle of the night. According to Acevedo’s testimony, the bird pecked at the rusty rooftop and at the windows before taking flight, issuing a terrifying scream. Others more readily accepted any suggestion that it was a space alien, an occupant of the UFOs reported on an almost daily basis over Puerto Rico at the time. Some clung to the belief that a gigantic vampire bat had somehow made it from the mainland to the Caribbean, slaking its thirst on the local cattle. Only days later, farmer Cecilio Hernández notified authorities that the elusive Moca Vampire had slain thirty-four chickens on his property at some point during the night. The supernatural entity was by now responsible for ninety animal deaths in a two week period.
A faint ray of hope—soon to be dissipated by harsh reality—appeared during this critical moment in the crisis: another farmer, Luis Torres, became the man of the hour after slaying two enormous snakes (Puerto Rican boas) measuring an unheard-of length of six feet. Torres had captured the snakes as they stood ready to attack a 600-pound heifer. The media hailed this act of heroism as the “solution to the mutilation riddle”; citizens could finally issue a collective sigh of relief.
However, the Moca Vampire had its own agenda. On March 18, 1975, two goats belonging to Hector Vega, a resident of Moca’s Barrio Pueblo, were found drained of blood. Puncture marks on the goats’ necks were the unmistakable sign that the strange entity causing the deaths was still at large and hungrier than ever: it returned to Vega’s farm the following night to finish off ten more goats and wound another seven. The horrified farmer also discovered that ten additional goats had gone missing.

This is very common when ufo’s are about in the same area. I wonder if any of the locals had seen any ufo’s while this has occured?

I’m not the only one who’s curious about the similarity between Chupacabra victims being drained of blood and the bloodless state of mutilated cattle am I?

There are similarities in the sense that the blood is gone. But it appears that in the animal mutes that technology is involved rather than an animal attack. A good book to read that has relevancy to the mute issue is Colm Kelleher’s “Brain Trust.” After reading that, you’ll never eat beef again!

There are things cryptid in this world that I accept as scientifically and taxonomically unacknowledged flesh-and-blood animals. They turn up in far flung jungles and in the deep sea, and are reported in places where human habitation ( or even incursion) is far from widespread or frequent.In reported “creature” cases where this sort of thing seems to be what has been seen, I am more than happy to look at said situations in a “rational”,”reasonable”, “practical”, manner (i.e. through the left-brain “hard science” prism). In other words, I can be a true “show me/prove it” skeptic.
On the other hand, when things don’t add up to what I perceive to be a nice “safe” left-brain solution to a seemingly anomalous puzzle, I start looking right-brain and start heading off into directions charted by the likes of Charles Fort, John Keel, Robert Anton Wilson,Jacques Vallee, Colin Wilson, some pub-crawling character named Redwing or Redfern (or some such), and an old mentor of mine named Martin Caidin.
I go right-brain, then, and start considering things from a more esoteric point of view (and, lately,”esoteric”…or “metaphysical”… has come more and more into line with things “quantum”).
I go right-brain with vampires, chupacabras, werewolves, manbats, “Dover Demons” and the like.
Where Puerto Rico is concerned, to me that is one strange place; particularly the El Yunque area (not to slight others). The UFO situation there is intense, as is the strange creature reportage. Somehow this doesn’t greatly surprise me, as P.R. is one “corner” of the “fictional/mythological” Bermuda Triangle, where even more weirdness abounds (and which I believe in firmly based on things passed on to me by Martin Caidin…whom I place MUCH more credence in than I do the most-of-the-time erroneous newspaper clippings of Larry “The Bermuda Triangle Mystery…Solved” Kusche…AND also on the up-to-date, diligently thorough research of Gian Quasar, who can routinely fire cannonade after cannonade of discrediting evidence into Kusche/CSI(CROCK) style “research” ).
I see Puerto Rico as a Keelian Window Area, where much strangeness comes together and does so on a fairly regular basis. What goes on here seems to have a lot of Carlos Castaneda-style weirdness to it, and things which strike me as perhaps sorcerous (think tulpa-creation of magickal beings here). Puerto Rico seems almost like a larger version of the NIDS Skinwalker Ranch in Utah, to put it bluntly. Pondering the doings in Puerto Rico makes me think of naguals, skinwalkers, Palo Mayombe, and the Brujeria cults of the type seen in Matamoros, Mexico decades ago…where homicidal black magic rituals were used in an attempt to gain personal power, power over the neighboring populace, and power over the police. It ultimately did not work, but that never stops anyone from trying it.
To me the greatest likelihood here is crossover creatures; transient things from outside “our” time-space “reality”. I don’t think this is a psy-ops job, nor any unidentified giant bat situation. Think it is either a brujeria type thing like Matamoros (this time working within a “window” of power) whereby the crooks are behind it, or else it is the amplified “Trickster” mechanism at work for its own ends and purposes. In this instance I view the Trickster as that mysterious all-pervasive intelligence (”Could it be…Satan?” asks the Church Lady)that seems to have existed on this planet as long..or longer…than we have. It thinks, it schemes, it manipulates, it has all kinds of fun jerking us around.
Does it cross over from another dimension? I don’t think so. I don’t think it HAS to. I think it is always here. I think it exists in THIS universe at a different vibrational resonance from us. Just like we have radio and tv broadcast waves all around us in the air at any time…reach your hand up and wave it…Ozzy or Stevie Nicks might just be passing through it…and Judge Judy might be vibrating through your spleen.
The stuff is there, right now, moving in you and through you and all through our world. We can’t hear it or see it unless we have the proper “converters”…televisions or radios…but its all there. And just like different frequencies get you different “stations” (classic rock, country, hard rock, etc., or NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, or whatever) maybe different frequencies right here will get you different…and “interesting”…things to see and “encounter”. Maybe “our world” is just a particular resonant frequency…say NBC. Our entire “reality” might then be “NBC reality”. But there is STILL an ABC reality out there (at a different frequency), a CBS reality (ditto), and on and on. But unless we could change our “reality frequency” we might never encounter CBS, ABC, etc. Does that mean they don’t exist? Nope. As long as Paul McCartney is moving through your heart and lungs right now singing “Hey Jude” or “Masterpiece Theatre” has gone through the back of your head and out the front, they might WELL exist.
And since many “lower” animals have the ability, seemingly, to pick up another resonances, you might well wonder what it is your dog keeps staring at in the corner of the room or why the cat’s ears are flattened as she intently eyeballs the “unoccupied” couch.
When we physically “die” here in this “reality” does our sentient energy-based life force merely shift to another frequency level and “keep on trucking”?
If electromagnetic forces might be used to alter “reality frequencies” in some way, might then CBS or ABC types come visiting in to NBC world from time to time? I often wonder.
And can intense concentration of mental energy (in the form of “sorcery” or otherwise) “summon” types of beings to “our” reality who only have to do a “frequency downshift” to get here? And when they GET here, can they maintain…for a period, at least…a corporeal presence by adapting their vibrational frequencies to ours…and assume forms they might “pick our brains” to construct…in good ways or bad? And if it suited them to do things to scare the bejeebies out of us…and mess with our minds…just for their own perverted “kicks”, might they perhaps DO so? I wonder about that, too.

This is a great post. As far as the overall phenomena is concerned, I think you have pretty much hit the nail on the head.
For the most part, as you know, I think we are dealing with a Tulpa/thought-form type of thing that can (and has) manifest in all sorts of forms, and for countless centuries (probably as long as we have been here).
Puerto Rico could well be a huge “window area” all of its own.
People often get surprised when I talk about Loch Ness and the Tulpa angle, and assume that “Nessie” is the only weird thing seen in the direct vicinity of the Loch. It isn’t.
There are numerous UFO encounters from there, Aleister Crowley once lived at Loch Ness at Boleskine House. While there, Crowley was involved in numerous rites and rituals that, as he would recall, got periously out of hand. causing a housemaid to leave, and a workman to go mad after spirit entities he invoked began to act of their own volition in a negative fashion.
The old graveyard near Boleskine has a history of witchcraft, there have been several MIB type encounters at the Loch, and much more.
So, I tend to view the collective Loch Ness phenomena (and the area) as one of those Keelian window areas too. I’m now just waiting for someone to see a huge, winged thing at the Loch. Give it time; it will happen…

Ted Holiday also had a clergyman, the Reverend Donald Ormand (if I’m not mistaken) perform a rite of exorcism at the loch years ago and, for a good long time there were no “Nessie” reports. They began to reappear only sporadically after noticeable down time.(See Holiday’s “The Goblin Uniuverse”)
Back to normal now, but the fact that an exorcism could even temporarily shut down the Ness monster has striking implications. Suggests that all the folks who worry about water quality there, or fish concentrations for the Nessiteras Rhombopterex (sp?)
breeding population might have the wrong notion indeed about what the “real situation” is. This might not BE a flesh-and-blood, eating, sleeping, reproducing entity , but, rather, some space-time transient zooform “manifestation” that doesn’t require food or air or anything else. And it doesn’t give a rat’s patootie WHAT Adrian Shine thinks about it.
This makes it part of that “window” business.
Something else does, too, though I haven’t seen you mention it. In many instances of people trying to hunt monsters you have camera jams and equipment failures (attempts at ghost documentation will often see power packs for recording units fail completely…only to be restored later when away from the locus of the investigation). You will also have people frequently struck down with out of the blue illnesses when they get “hot on the trail” ( Holiday would get frequent cases of neuralgia in some of his investigations that would put him down for long periods). Illnesses turned up in the Mothman investigations, and , over at the Unknown Creature Spot group we have been hashing out other sudden-illness
incidents that seem to curiously parallel investigations or sightings (wondering, in some cases…but not others…if infra-sound is perhaps involved). In the Michigan man-bat incident this summer both the witnesses were immediately overpowered with disorientation, dizziness, and acute nausea and vomiting. Might a mechanism like this also drop cows or other animals and render them helpless before a vampiric assault? Does the consumption of blood (based on “our” vibrational resonance in “our” world)somehow help an “outsider” manifestation maintain molecular stability longer and, thus, hang around “NBC” longer than they might otherwise be able to?
I would also add that the two “manbat” witnesses are STILL not physically “100 percent” recovered from this encounter (the father, “Wohali”, has shown more long-term effects than the son, but both still don’t “feel right”. Wohali also does not like to TALK about the creature they saw as he feels firmly that to talk about it or to re-imagine it, gives it more “power” to stay here longer in our reality.) Can this thing still act to ‘drain” these people of health/life-force energies? This is what the TRUE “vampire” mythology of the past(pre-Bram Stoker)maintained. Nobody saw bite marks back then, nor really found proof of missing blood. people just wasted (like Mercy Brown & family in Rhode Island).
It is also been noted by us (and I’ll address that to you, Nick, in a private e-mail) that the principal and initial investigator in this manbat encounter…who went to the site very soon after the incident in the company of Wohali and son, and began to diligently investigate the event…went there in good health and was soon struck down by a “sudden-appearing and aggressive” illness still under treatment.
None of this kind of stuff strikes me as “natural”, or of the “left brain” type of “rational” cryptozoology. This I see as more of that “Goblin Universe” stuff. This, of course, makes me a kook and a whacko by CSICOP definition, but, hey, I call ‘em as I see ‘em. As William Shakespeare (or was that Robert Devereaux or Francis Bacon? Or…?) once said: “There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dremt of in your philosophy”

This is all indeed classic goblin universe type stuff. The jamming camera issue is a classic one (heck, there are so many angles to the Tulpa/goblin angle that I sometimes forget to mention them all myself!).
Of course, there is no way a physical animal can cause a camera to jam - and yet it happens.
The phenomenon is, I believe, essentially negative in nature as it relates to us; and the classic scenario of “psychic backlash” (that can appear in the form of repeated bad luck, illness, and things going wrong all the time) is a very real - and disturbing too.
Whatever the Tulpa/cormon style intelligence is that mixes with us, it does indeed display vampiric qualities in terms of using us almost in a parasitic fashion and then tossing us aside when it’s done with us - or worse, sucking us in further into its realm of unreality - and that’s when the problems start: the spontaneous bad health, the bad luck, etc.
