Mexico: A 1974 UFO Crash

Tonight’s episode of the History Channel’s UFO Hunters focuses on what is rapidly becoming known as Mexico’s Roswell: a controversial event said to have occurred in 1974 and that has become the subject of a full-length book by Noe Torres and Ruben Uriarte.
I first met Ruben while investigating Crop Circles back in the UK around 1996 and we met up again in 2005 to make a Discovery Channel documentary on Roswell - the twist being that the show was focused upon hauntings at Roswell.
Then, I ran into both Ruben and Noe at Ryan Wood’s crashed UFO gig in Vegas last November, where they presented an illuminating lecture on the case. Ruben and Noe gave me a copy of their book, which I urge anyone with an interest in crashed UFO reports to read. Indeed, the book is packed with information on this intriguing affair, as well as data on other alleged Mexican UFO crashes and US military mishaps on Mexican soil.
And you can learn more about the incident tonight, as the following press-release - that Ruben has just issued - reveals:
“Union City Author to be on History Channel’s UFO Hunters
“Union City resident Ruben Uriarte, co-author of Mexico’s Roswell: The Chihuahua UFO Crash, will appear in the History Channel’s UFO Hunters on February 20. Uriarte, along with co-author Noe Torres, will help in the investigation of a 1974 crash between a small aircraft and unidentified flying discs.
“Mexico’s Roswell: The Chihuahau UFO Crash is one of the few books to highly expose the historic and controversial events of the night of August 25, 1974. Uriarte and Torres explain that the inexplicable crash created a race between the Mexican and U.S governments to find evidence of other life forms and technology beyond our planet.
“Uriarte and Torres will have the privilege of explaining these events as technical advisers for their television segment filmed in Chihuahua, Mexico.
“Uriarte and Torres have been interviewed on several sci-fi radio shows, including Coast to Coast AM with George Noory, and previously appeared on the History Channel in 2005.
“Uriarte graduated from Cal State Hayward with a degree in psychology and Latin American studies. He is a member MUFON, the current state director for Northern California, and MUFON’s liaison to Mexico’s leading civilian UFO group, OMIFO.
“Torres holds a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Texas at Austin. After authoring two books on sports history, Ghost Leagues (2005) and Baseball’s First Mexican-American Star (2006), and a motion picture screenplay, Torres has embarked with Ruben Uriarte on a series of UFO books, of which this is the first.
“More information on Ruben Uriarte, Noe Torres, and their book is available at www.mexicosroswell.com.
“Mexico’s Roswell: The Chihuahua UFO Crash is available in softcover (ISBN: 978-1-60264-013-9) from Virtualbookworm.com. The book can also be ordered from most bookstores around the Unites States and the United Kingdom.”

Well, it sounds like an interesting case, and I would like to know when it surfaced. Back in those days (1970s) the highest UFOlogy authority in Mexico was Pedro Ferriz Santacruz, a personal friend of Dr. Hynek who had also good public relations with mexican president Echeverría Alvarez; so if there was someone the mexican government would have contacted if there was a military operation to retrieve a crashed UFO, my guess is Ferriz would have been it.
But I don’t remember him mentioning that particular case, and I have read some of his books, I watched the programs of the second version of Un Mundo nos Vigila, and I even attended 2 conferences in the 80s where he appeared.
And that OMIFO group? never heard of it. Although I’m certainly not the leading authority in the comings and goings of UFO investigation groups here in Mexico, of course. But it is kind of disapointing to note that their webpage (www.omifo.net) it’s pretty neglected.

RPJ:
To the best of my knowledge, the first time the case surfaced into the UFO community was in July 1993, when a report on the matter - from a source unknown - was mailed to a US researcher named Elaine Douglass.
The text of that same report was published in Leonard Stringfield’s “Status Report VII” in 1994.
The complete text of the report, and the story of the event as it was known at that time at least, can also be found on pages 177 to 182 of Ryan Wood’s 2005 book, “Majic Eyes Only.”
The story has appeared periodically in magazines since 1993 - but Torres and Uriarte are the first to dig deeply into it all.

Thanks for that Nick.
Oh, and changing the subject completely for a moment, did you know that your book is a required reading at U. Maine? Congrats!

Hey Nick, you mention a Discovery Channel program from 2005 about hauntings at Roswell. Did this program ever air? The reason I ask is because I recall hearing Joshua Warren talk about such a program at the time, saying some interesting footage was taken at a seance in one of the old hangers, and then nothing more was heard about the program. I was really intrigued but I don’t think the program ever aired. Is this the same program?
Finally, this is kind of personal, but does the paranormal just not interest you that much- just wondering if we might ever see a paranormal themed Redfern book on the horizon?

Hey Ben
Yeah, that is the same show. Josh is a good friend of mine and we’ve done a few gigs together (see http://www.dark30tour.com) as well as the Discovery show.
No, unfortunately, it never was broadcast. But you’re right: there was some real weirdness. We held a midnight seance in the old Hangar 84 at Roswell as the psychics in the team (Laura, Karyn and Heidi) tried to contact the dead Roswell entities.
Yep, there was some very weird stuff recorded on-screen: something odd flying across the screen and one of the cameramen collapsed.
The paranormal interests me greatly. My book “Man-Monkey” is heavily paranormal based, and details why I am convinced that Bigfoot is a paranormal (in simplistic terms) creature, rather than just some lumbering ape hiding our from society.
I’m working on a new book right now that follows a similar path: links between the paranormal and mystery animals. Should be published later this year.

I did, but thanks for the link!
Cheers
