That's a hoot! I always got a chuckle thinking about that story, but never knew if it was exaggeration or not. Guess it was true.

I heard mention several times over the course of the late sixties and the seventies that von Daniken would get himself periodically in trouble on misdemeanor level criminal charges and go spend several months at a time in the slammer. I remember one book reviewer from "way back when" asking why anyone would want to lend any credence at all to the writings of a career criminal ("bunco" artist and confidence man) and serial convict who stole all "his" evidence and theories, uncredited and unacknowledged, from OTHER people and constantly had the world chattering about "Von Daniken's" ideas and theories while the true originators of these notions sat and seethed in the background. Insomuch as I remember reading/hearing these things, I'd say, yes, your old roomie had a handle on something there.

Thanks, Nick. It's nice to have those ideas collected and summarized like that.

Anyone who is particularly fond of the writings and ideas of Zecharia Sitchin might also be interested in the opposing ideas of Mike Heiser; a pedigreed scholar of ancient languages.

When I lived in Germany I had a roommate from Switzerland. One time I brought up the name of Erich von Daniken and he told me a funny story. He said that von Daniken would get himself incarcerated for something or other and live rent-free on the tax payers of the penal system during which time he would crank out another book. It seems von Daniken financed his writing career via prison. Don't know if that's true or not but it made for a comical story.
