Bill,

Yep, I think a lot of people don't realize that being president doesn't open all doors when "need to know" rears its head.

Hell, can you imagine the highest echelons of the Intelligence community briefing George Bush (sonny-boy, I mean, not his old man) on the US's UFO secrets?!

No, neither can I! As we know, being president doesn't always mean you have open access to the inner sanctum - and nor should they either.

Whatever "the government" really "knows" (which may not be too much more than we know), I'd say Truman, Eisenhower and Bush Sr. knew a lot. JFK, maybe. Johnson, who knows? Same for Nixon. Reagan? Probably some - just to keep him happy. Clinton? He may have come close, but no cigar (hoho).

Ford really tried on occasion to push for legitimate investigation of the UFO phenomenon, but was always thwarted by the Pentagon, notably a dismissive Robert McNamara (who told untruth after untruth and did spin after spin on the actual evidence while as SECDEF) and by Hector Quintanilla of Blue Book. Ed Ruppelt was an honest, inquisitive, and thoughtfully diligent pursuer of truths in the UFO mystery; Quintanilla was his exact opposite. An implacably true "Company Man" where the Air Force (and Robertson Panel)were concerned, Quintanilla may well be the most openly anti-UFO "toadie" that ever occupied the Blue Book OIC chair. With McNamara as Secretary of Defense and Quintanilla riding shotgun at Blue Book (and "The Group" holding the lid on things), there was no way any of Ford's efforts to seek "disclosure" OR responsible evidentiary evaluations was ever going to take place. The Pentagon's answer to Ford's agitations was "The Condon Report" and we all know what pasture-poop THAT was!
