Are You Being Watched?
I have a new book published this week titled Celebrity Secrets: Government Files on the Rich and Famous, which is a study of documentation declassified under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act by agencies such as the FBI, CIA, Army, Navy and others on countless celebrities from the 1940s to the present day.
While the book has little to do with UFOs (although if you look closely you’ll see that the book does contains some intriguing snippets of ufological data), it does reveal the many and varied reasons (some understandable, some idiotic, and others just downright weird) why the official world watched, and continues to watch, the stars of the stage, television and the big-screen.
Indeed, the list is long and impressive, and includes: Abbott and Costello; Ernest Hemingway; Errol Flynn; Jack Kerouac; John Wayne; Billie Holiday; Audie Murphy; Frank Sinatra; Jimi Hendrix; John Denver; the Sex Pistols; the MC5; John Lennon; Mickey Mantle; and Rock Hudson, to name just a few.
I’ve had a longstanding interest in determining how and why official agencies secretly watch the activities of members of the general public; it’s an interest that goes back more than a decade, when I was watched for a while by the British Police Force’s Special Branch, purely because I was taking an interest in official establishments where, it had been alleged, classified Government-sponsored UFO research was taking place. I detailed the strange story in my last book, On the Trail of the Saucer Spies.
And in the wake of the publication of Celebrity Secrets, I was emailed yesterday by someone asking if I could list some of the various people and organizations in the UFO subject who I know for certain have been the subject of either official files, investigations, or interest. Well, yes, I can. And here it is, below. The reasons behind the surveillance are both long and complicated, and I recommend that anyone who wants to learn the whole strange saga reads Saucer Spies.
The list below is based chiefly upon my acquisition of the officially declassified files on the relevant people and sometimes as a result of their direct or indirect testimony. Some of the names may be familiar, and others may not. But one thing I can say is that all of them have played significant roles within ufology.

If you think you’re being watched, you really might be. As the list above shows, you’re far from being alone.

Remarkably, I haven’t asked for my own file, if one exists.
I had a period of paranoia about 10 years ago when I was SURE that I was being watched, but I eventually tired of it–perhaps the subject of a future post.

I may be mistaken but I thought half of the people mentioned by Nick are believed to be working in cooperation with those doing the surveillance…

You bring up an interesting point.
Yes, allegations have been made about some of those on the list being involved in surveillance.
However, it’s clear that the various official agencies involved in watching people in Ufology weren’t always aware of what each other’s agencies were doing.
So on the one hand, there may have been recruitment secretly by “Agency A” of someone in ufology; whereas “Agency B” had no idea of the recruitment, but was watching the relevant person for their own reasons.
That’s the key thing: agencies don’t just keep information from the public and the media. They keep it from each other too.

Last night our little forum that had been following the Saga of Dan Burisch was taken down - locked and banned.
Dondep rationalizes it this way:
