Since we are acquiring the technology to produce small surveilance devices that can mimick birds or even insects, surely a more technologically advanced extraterrestrial civilization could have done that to investigate us right from the moment they arrived here. So, why the need to be so... conspicuous? I think many of us suspect the answer, because being conspicuous is part of their "game". It's all a weird orchestrated psycho-drama that employs teatricality and extravagant performances to imprint sublte messages in the collective unconscious. Or maybe it's just that, by being so evident, they have acquired the perfect mask.
