Circle Making

As many people will know, I have argued for years that the very complex Crop Circles - or “Pictograms,” as they are known - are made by people.

Indeed in 2000, a good friend of mine, Matthew Williams, became the first person (and to date, the only person) to be arrested, charged and convicted by the British Police Force for making a Crop Circle (the actual charge was causing damage to property).

The above-photo (taken a couple of years back at Nevada’s Valley of Fire) show Matt on the far left (next to him is Kenn Thomas, then Greg, Jon Downes of the British-based Center for Fortean Zoology, and me).

Matt alerted me this morning to the fact that he has just posted to YouTube a 9-minute piece of footage that shows him and several colleagues engaged in making a crop circle during daylight for a British newspaper in 2001 (Matt is the one with the blue t-shirt and short hair).

Here’s the link to the film. The location is near the historic Silbury Hill, Wiltshire, England.

As you’ll see from the film, a dedicated and skilled team can create a formation with few problems at all. Watch it from beginning to end; as right near the end there is an aerial shot of the formation taken by Matt from his microlight.

In the near future, Matt is going to post footage of him making a complex formation at night in New Zealand a few years back for a Japanese TV company.

The problem that people like Matt face is that they are portrayed (in very simplistic terms) as “hoaxers.” Unfortunately, this demonstrates the lack of understanding as to why people like Matt do what they do.

Most of those who make such formations have zero interest in fooling people just for the sake of it. Some view themselves as artists - but artists who use the living medium of the crop, instead of paint and canvas.

Matt has experienced numerous weird phenomena (missing time, weird balls of floating light and much more) within Crop Circles of his own making, and is convinced that such formations attract paranormal phenomena.

As Matt says:

“I believe that the human Circle makers may be guided by a connection to a higher intelligence, a gestalt or group mind; and the symbols that are put down are deep-routed subconscious expressions. This would explain why some telepaths or psychics claim to have seen Crop Circle designs before they appear – because we are all dialed into the same group-mind ‘internet.’

“The synchronistic events which happen each year in the unfolding designs that the Circle makers come out with are often remarked as being too much of a coincidence. Circle designs have been repeated in different parts of the country by teams who didn’t share designs beforehand. There have even been teams who have gone out on the same night to the same field, made designs, not knowing the other team was present, and their designs have had similarities. The chances of this happening, without planning, are slim; so it would appear that something paranormal is working for the Circle makers.

“Why is it that Circles have power? I know that crop is a living medium. Unlike any other type of canvas that an artist may use, crop has a life-force energy which, when used on such a large scale, makes crops blend natural Earth-energy magic with human-energy magic. What Crop Circle makers may have rediscovered is the ancient art of natural magic – working with large emblems as part of the energy system of the Earth.”

Of course, you may or may not agree with Matt’s views; but the point is that his actions take the human angle far away from the simplistic idea that people like him are merely hoaxers trying to deceive people. It goes much, much deeper than that.

A most interesting video, and obviously a lot of work! I’m unconvinced that this is any final explanation of the crop circle phenomenon however. I’ve always felt that black ops Star Wars technology better explains some of the more complex designs which appear overnight – face it, any “artiste” with an unlimited budget and state of the art lasers to play with should be able to do something like this from a satellite without resort to tape measures and stomping boards. And let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater – some circles still seem to be paranormal in origin. Most of the fascination surrounding our UFO/etc. “hobby” is that it is apparently unexplainable!

    Gavilan:
Certainly there are some formations rhat even the circle makers themselves know they didn’t make. And there are a number of decades-old (and centuries-old) repports too.
I think it’s important too, to remember that even a number of the human circle makers (such as Matthew, as per his words) are convinced that there is a paranormal/magical element to what they do and the manifestations that appear even in human-made circles.

Well, I have nothing against Circle Makers, but then again I’m not a farmer. I’m wondering if these guys economically compensate the owners of the fields where they perform their art/magick. After all, the only thing I don’t find kosher about this whole business is that it’s an illegal trespassing.

I suppose that’s why you don’t see many circle makers in places like Texas ;-)

  4. Nick Redfern Says:

    RPJ:

It is illegal, unless the makers get permission…

However, some farmers have earned (literally) thousands of UK Pounds by charging people to come into the fields and see the circles.

The other thing that a lot of people don’t realize is that when crop circles are made, the crop is not destroyed. Rather, it still grows (the people flatten the corn; they don’t snap it). And all the farmer has to do to retrieve the flattened corn is to lower the blades to the ground when it’s being cut.

Yeah, I’m sure in TX there might be a few circle makers subjected to blasts from the occasional shot-gun!

    Thanks or the clarification Nick.

I would like to make another question: Has anyone tested if there’s a change in the nutritional properties of the wheat used to create a circle? Does bread baked from wheat that came from a field where a crop circle appeared taste better than bread from regular wheat?

I dunno, it suddenly occurred to me that, if there really are weird things happening around the fields when the crops are being made by these people—or by some unknown force— that perhaps this affects the wheat in the long run aswell.

    RPJ:
I know studies have been done on the crop; but to what extent this has been done re the nutritional angle, I don’t know. I’ll ask around.

  7. bruce duensing Says:

The comments on paranormal experiences are interesting and would be more so, if more detailed. The damages done for the sake of
expressing yourself to someone’s livelihood, let alone the lack of respect this demonstrates sours the whole piece for me personally….rationalizations aside …after the fact..Maybe crop taggers is a more apt term…I hope they don’t switch to spray paint….If they had gotten permission in advance…thats another story. Its an interesting footnote to the phenomenon.

    Bruce:
The interview with Matthew was much more extensive, and I hope to have the whole thing transcribed and published in the near future. There’s a great deal more about the paranormal experiences, synchronicities and much more.

  9. Ellis Taylor Says:

    Thanks for posting this.

Talk about rough! though. The finished article might look pretty from the air but on the ground it’s woefully ragged. A poor imitation of circles I’ve been in.

Nick, the last time I spoke to Winston he said he hadn’t heard from you re the 7/7 East Field formation he filmed forming mysteriously - the one that MW claims to know who made it.

  10. Nick Redfern Says:

    Hey Ellis
That’s weird - can you remind me of Winston’s email again, and I’ll send him another email.
    Best
    Nick

  11. Ellis Taylor Says:

    Hi Nick,
Could you please send me an email address to write to? Cheers,
    Ellis
