UFOMystic Exclusive Interview With Philip Mantle

The following is an exclusive interview for UFOMystic I did with the editor of Britain’s new UFO MATRIX magazine, Philip Mantle.

Richard Thomas: How did your interest in the UFO phenomenon begin, and how did you start writing about the subject?

Philip Mantle: I’ve always had an interest in all things “paranormal” ever since I can remember. I used to do talks at school on ghosts and other things. Not a great subject to impress the girls with I’m afraid. I joined the Yorkshire UFO Society in the late 1970’s. YUFOS was set up by brothers Graham and Mark Birdsall. My first attempt at writing anything was in a hand printed item YUFOS produced called the YUFOS JOURNAL. It detailed a sighting I had on Cradle Hill in Warminster. Just a strange light, nothing spectacular. But that’s how it started for me.

Richard Thomas: I know you’ve written a book about the faked alien autopsy film, what is your opinion on alleged UFO crashes like Roswell? And do you have any strong opinions on what UFOs could be?

Philip Mantle: Roswell, now there’s a question. I honestly don’t know what happened at Roswell. We all know something ‘crashed’. Even the USAF and the debunkers admit that. But what ? The one thing that puzzles me is why haven’t witnesses come forward, eye witnesses, stating ’sorry guys, you really got it wrong. I was on the clean up team and it really was only a balloon’ but that has not happened. Unfortunately Roswell has now almost drifted off into the realms of myth and folklore and it has been tarnished by hoaxers like Ray Santilli. So far there has been no “smoking gun” physical evidence produced to show that the Roswell crash was ET, until that happens the debate goes on.

Richard Thomas: How did UFO MATRIX magazine come about and what differentiates it from other paranormal magazines? And why did you choose the name “UFO MATRIX”?

Philip Mantle: UFO MATRIX came about quite by accident really. Malcolm Robinson and I were in discussion with our book publisher and a colleague overseas who publishes his own UFO magazine asked if we’d be interested in the English language rights. We discussed this with our publisher who looked at this offer seriously but proposed that we simply go it alone. We toyed with a few ideas for a title for the magazine, and after a few beers UFO MATRIX came out of the hat via our boss. The reason being that we have no corporate views on the UFO subject and we are open to all ideas. A real mix, a matrix if you like.

Richard Thomas: There have been three issues of UFO MATRIX magazine so far, when is issue 4 out and what are some of the articles readers can look forward to in the next issue?

Philip Mantle: Issue 4 of UFO MATRIX will be out at the end of January in the UK via WH Smith and a month later in the USA/rest of the world, via Barnes & Noble and Borders. You can also subscribe online at the Healings of Atlantis website. In this issue we take a look at “ancient astronauts.” We have an exclusive from Paola Harris and her research into a UFO crash in l945. The “secret space program” even gets featured by some guy called Richard Thomas (laughs) plus a whole lot more. We are getting very good comments from around the world and your support is greatly appreciated.

Richard Thomas: Thanks Philip, anything else you would like to mention and how can readers contact you to find out more about UFO MATRIX magazine?

Philip Mantle: I’d also like to mention that I am organising a large UFO CONFERENCE for UFO MATRIX for the weekend of October 15 & 16 this year. It will be held in West Yorkshire and the two provisional speakers so far are Kathleen Marden and Travis Walton. More details will follow soon. If anyone is interested in more details they could contact me at my email address.

Thanks,

Philip.

Richard Thomas lives in Swansea, South Wales, and graduated from Swansea University with a BA in American Studies in 2007. Richard grew up watching science fiction shows, including his all-time favourite program: Doctor Who. As a child, this enthusiasm for Sci-Fi evolved into an interest in space, UFOs and other esoteric subjects. In 2008, Richard began to write his regular 'Room 101' column for the popular esoteric website Binnall of America, a bi-weekly column focusing on parapolitics and the unexplained, in addition to interviews with some of the leading researchers in these fields, including among others, Nick Pope, Timothy Good and Nick Redfern. Soon after that, he started writing a Sci-Fi / TV related column for Stuart Miller's Alien Worlds Magazine. In 2009, he expanded his contributions to BoA with a second column, titled 'Sci-Fi Worlds,' exploring the connection between science fiction and the esoteric. Recently, he’s contributed feature articles for publications such as the glossy Paranormal Magazine and Scott Burditt’s Doomwatch Fanzine.
