Ha! I Knew It: Skeptics Infiltrate McMinnville UFO Fest
I’ve attended the last three McMinnville, UFO Festivals; this May will be my fourth time. (May 14th through May 16th.) Every year I’ve noticed that, during the Q and A periods after various presentations, there is at least one uber-skeptoid who gets up and asks a long winded, non-relevant “question” that annoys, baffles or amuses the majority of those present. I’ve wondered why would someone pay to go to something they don’t, um, “believe in,” then I realized: they’re skeptics, it’s what they do. They really do get together and plan their day at the festival. On the Oregonians for Science and Reason website:
O4R members have been monitoring the festival and learning UFO lore: local sightings, cattle mutilations, alien abductions, and, most recently, the recovery of alien implants.
“Monitoring?” What, are they the CIA?
I wish I could remember some of the questions asked by these skeptics in the past; they’re a hoot. The questions are often rambling, pedantic, have little to do with what was being presented, and show an ignorance of the topic in general.
Aside from all the other fun stuff I’ll be doing there, I’ll be sure to pay closer attention when the skeptics pop up with their questions. I also plan to talk with the religious group that shows up; they shout and sing religious stuff from across the street at the Hotel Oregon, which is full of saucer heads, like myself, or, in their world, The Devil’s Spawn. This time I’m going to try to talk to them and find out what exactly it is they’re upset about.
I’m also going to try and record some discussions for our first Cafe Esoterica podcast; which, when I figure out what the hell I’m doing, will go up somewhere, somehow. Clearly the whole thing is going to be an adventure.
This year’s McMinnville UFO Festival will feature Travis Walton and Colin Andrews. You can find out more information at the UFO Fest.com site.

I can’t figure out why they care what goes on at a UFO Fest? I know that I don’t care about what goes on at their conferences (or whatever they call them) enough to sit through 5 minutes of one, let alone spend money on a ticket.

I’ve learned that there are some angry atheist (no not sayin all atheist are angry) who like to hijack the term skeptic. They are as intent on “saving” us from our foolish ways as any religious zealot is in saving our souls. Recently, I commented on a forum where I visit often. I happened to say I “believed” in purpose in the universe and that I thought some people acted as if science were a position and not a method (Credit to Rupert Sheldrake for that quote.) I also said that there was not objective thing called science. But that “science” was many, many diciplines studying many, many different ways of finding out things about our world. Well, I was told I was “attacking” science. I was not logical. All paranormal belief was simply ignorance or equivalent to the santa claus myth. Furthermore everything the poster said was “proven by science.” Also, in a private message he let me know Raymond Moody was full of bull shit. Now, I don’t care what ya believe but how can you even have dialog with folks like that?

Oh I forgot. He wished me “Peace” at the end.
