MOD-UFO-RIP

As this story from the BBC shows, the British Ministry of Defense has decided to wash its hands of the UFO issue. Of course, it’s not quite so clear-cut.

By the MoD’s own admission it will continue (because it has to!) investigate (via radar and the scrambling of aircraft) any penetrations of British airspace by unidentified sources. And, who knows if some of those potential threats might remain unresolved and unidentified? If they do indeed remain unresolved and unidentified, then by definition then the MoD is still investigating UFOs.

I suspect, however, the MoD clearly realizes this, and its statement actually means that officialdom doesn’t want people sending in letters or phoning the MoD switchboard to report sightings of flying saucers, little gray (or green men), etc, etc anymore; and this is their way of getting out of handling a subject that they really don’t understand - or have any interest in understanding.

Couldn’t agree more with your analysis; in the grand budgetary scheme of things, the quoted figure for running the desk isn’t huge but the admin costs for FOIA work probably made a larger dent. In terms of the Ministry’s corporate ‘attitude’ towards the subject (if indeed they even have one), the statement doesn’t really change anything as by their own admission very little real investigation of reports from the public was entered into.

From a psychosocial perspective, the media reception for this story should be quite interesting. Whilst you can’t really draw conclusions from anecdotal evidence and self-selecting groups, the UK reports, blogs and comments I’ve seen so far suggest that much contemporary ‘common sense’ or consensus wisdom on the subject errs towards vehement ETH disbelief.

If that is the case, I wonder what that means for people making UFO reports in that apparently negative climate, and how this might affect what people perceive they’ve seen.

“British authorities give UFOs the finger…”
Your titles and subtitles sometimes crack me up Nick.

So now that the MoD has finally stopped ministering silly saucers, it maybe time that they finally devote themselves to their original goal: ministering silly walks —a matter of national security I’m sure :-P

    Ben:

I try and come up with amusing titles when the mood hits me! LOL.
