Kid Trapped In Flying Saucer Balloon Over Colorado (not)
A story developing today says that a 6-year-old child climbed into a flying saucer-shaped balloon this morning and probably untied the line holding it to the ground. The boy is apparently floating above the Fort Collins area and has passed 7000 feet.
Frank Warren reported at UFO Chronicles:
Larimer County Sheriff’s Department, stated the boy’s family had been building an “experimental aircraft” at their home on Fossil Ridge Road in Fort Collins; the boy got onto the aircraft and detached the rope holding it in place and it lifted off.
The Flying Saucer balloon is purported to be 20 foot by 5 foot covered with foil, or mylar. The FAA is tracking the aircraft on its radar tower and has notified the Denver International Airport. The boy was last seen two miles south of Evans, near County Road 46 and Highway 85. Local news media is tracking the balloon.
A live feed from the local news station currently (12:45 PM PST) says that the balloon has landed, but without the boy. Details continue to come in.
The boy’s name is Falcon Heene. Another local news outlet says: [Father] Richard Heene has been described by friends as a sort of “mad scientist.” He is a storm chaser and has a web site called The Psyience Detectives, which “investigates the mysteries of science and psychic phenomenon.”
I can just see the trouble coming with this one.
UPDATE: Of course, now everyone knows that the whole thing was cooked up as a publicity stunt by Richard Heene for some sort of reality show. Heene is apparently also a fan of David Icke and his reptilian conspiracy theories. The usual complaints about this episode casting more bad light on UFO study have started, although it really makes no difference, and the real losers here are the Heene kids, who will have to live with the stupidity of their parents for the rest of their lives.

As it turns out, all just a hoax, and the parents will likely be charged with a range of felonies and misdemeanors… which is better than the alternative, namely that the story was true, the kid got killed, and the parents wound up charged with something far worse.
