Philip K. Dick Tour Scheduled

C’mon, you don’t have a job. You don’t have anything to do Monday afternoon. You live in California, where mystic science fiction writer Philip K. Dick lived most of his adult life, specifically in Fullerton, where my friend (and co-founder of The Excluded Middle magazine) Robert Larson grew up.

Robert will be leading a tour of his hometown, where he has painstakingly located many sites that Dick mentioned in his novels, including the apartment where the “pink beam” of a Vast Active Living Intelligence System (or VALIS for short) allegedly struck Dick on February 3, 1974, changing his life forever.

Dick did not take his strange experiences literally, at least not in the way that caused belief in one interpretation and stopped his personal evolution. In this way, he was much like psychologist Carl Jung, who was one of his inspirations. Coincidentally, Jung’s intensely personal journal known as the “Red Book” will be published this fall.

Robert will meet Phil Dick seekers at the corner of East Chapman Avenue and North State College Boulevard in Fullerton at 3PM on September 21st. The event is sponsored by the League of Western Fortean Intermediatists (LOWFI) and is free, but donations for the tourguide will be accepted.

Great author whose life was as fascinating as his books. He led an odd life with a capital “O”. What I don’t understand is why his dad wasn’t thrown in prison after taking out life insurance policies on Phil and his sister and trying to starve them to death. Apparently the dad was successful in this plan with the sister but does anyone know what Dick thought of Pops?

On a side note, this is my second name, password, and email address to use here since that WordPress link to retrieve a forgotten password doesn’t seem to work for me. Sorry ’bout that.

    Haywood (reference to 2001?),

This site has had problems with posting etc. in the past, but the support is spotty at best. I apologize.

I didn’t know that about Phil. I’ll ask tomorrow.

    Haywood,

Our tourguide didn’t know about the alleged child abuse. He wanted to look into it though.

What was I doing on Monday? Wishing I lived close enough to come along.

    But it’s a bit of a swim.
