Visiting A Gravesite

While in New Mexico last week for a conference, Nick and I visited the grave of Paul Bennewitz, whose tragic story I documented in my book Project Beta. We arrived in the late afternoon as the sun was setting over the State Capitol.
We had little trouble finding the grave, as the Santa Fe National Cemetery is laid out with the expected military precision. Nick asked me to say a few words as he ran his digital recorder. I expressed a sort of gratitude for living through what must have been a personal hell that I was allowed to recount in the book.
His story is a little-known but important chapter in the history of UFOs and one way in which the subject is treated and used by the intelligence services of the U.S. Government. I regret that I never got the chance to meet Paul Bennewitz. He passed away the week before I arrived in New Mexico to begin research for the book.
The simple marker (strangely weathered in comparison to older ones around it) reads:
PAUL FREDERICK BENNEWITZ, JR.
SIC U.S. COAST GUARD
WORLD WAR II
SEPT. 30, 1927 JUN 23, 2003
