News Is In The Eye Of The Reporter
The recent “Underground Base” conference in Dulce has brought up both old and new issues, many of which continue to be controversial. Like many news reports, readers are well-advised to seek out all available coverage for a more accurate picture. You might even read my version of events, posted on the day of the conference.
A well balanced report by Norio Hayakawa, who organized the conference, can be seen at Jerry Pippin’s site. Also linked from the site is a write-up by Dr. Michael Salla, who was also one of the speakers. Dr. Salla’s piece may not be as balanced. One reason for this is this segment of the report on my talk about Paul Bennewitz and the origins of the Dulce Base legend:
He explained how Bennewitz had captured physical evidence of UFOs near Kirtland Air Force Base and connected this to claims of an underground base at the Archuleta Mesa.
As I mentioned in a comment at the site, this statement misrepresents what was actually said. I stated that Bennewitz filmed bright lights and intercepted radio signals that he believed were the result of “alien” activities at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. Films of lights and recordings of strange transmissions cannot really be considered “physical evidence of UFOs,” at least not by most of the reading public.
All writers edit the truth to some extent. This is because we are individuals with different backgrounds and motivations. What a good reporter does is try to present an overall picture of a news event whether he or she agrees with the issues or not. An excellent example is the coverage by Raam Wong from the Albuquerque Journal, which appeared on the front page of the print version the day after the conference.
All three reports did accurately state that I had changed my mind about the possible existence of an underground facility in or near the Dulce area, the reasons for which I will explain in a future post. This is not to say that I now believe that aliens are (or were) launching an attack on Earth from somewhere in northern New Mexico, simply that there may be something worthy of investigation.

Got half way through your radio interview — glad to hear you being soft-pedaled as a “doubter” (instead of the dreader “S” word used with scorn on coasttocoast) and since I’ve been to Chaco a couple times that was a nice reminder of an awesome site. I spent probably 2 or 3 months total at Ghost Ranch right near Chaco Canyon.

Drew,
Why only halfway?
I AM skeptical about lots of things. True skepticism is different from the sort that is usually covered in popular culture. The fact that I said “I doubt my former doubt” was picked up and that’s fine.
Ghost Ranch is about 130 miles/ 3 hours from Chaco.

I actually have no computer, no phone, no t.v. and no car so my library time for the computer ran out. On the other hand I made my deep freeze (MN winter) project to watch all of the documentaries on dvd in the library — 1600. I’m halfway through. I just finished all of season one for the Paranormal State show — the Penn State Paranormal Research Society. That’s a really cool show I think and does a good job balancing the skeptic and the psychological and the paranormal. Still they’re not sitting in full-lotus doing tantric trance so I plugged Chunyi Lin over on their website forum. haha.
Oh the Paranormal State Mothman episode was really awesome and if you watch the dvd commentary John Keel was contacted for the show but declined to be on it.
