UFOs: A Brit Comments

Today, we have a guest-post, from British ufologist Nigel Wright:

ODD THOUGHTS FROM

A BRITISH UFOLOGIST

A personal ramble into my world

By

Nigel Wright

IT’S ALL A MATTER OF DEFINITION…

It may seem strange to some that I, a British ufologist of a certain age (which I wish to keep to myself!), should wish to write a blog for Nick’s blog. I must admit that, at first, I too thought it to be one of my odder moments of imagination.

However, upon reflection I have come to thinking that there might be some point to my writing this. Although there is much written and said about the two races (US and English) being two totally different cultures, I am one of those who revel in the common bonds that link our two great nations.

In my various outings as a lecturer across the UK, I have been amused on more than one occasion, by the confusion that is caused by the differences in our two languages!

My point is that despite all our differences, we two nations do indeed have common roots. I find it inspiring that, despite having been at odds on more than one occasion, even to the point of war, we can still recognize the good points of each of our respective cultures.

I for one, admire the American ability to overcome adversity, and rebuild and reinvent ones self. For sheer personal drive and determination, our US cousins to take some beating! It is true however, that we English do possess that “stiff upper lip” type of mentality.

We can also stick to our guns when the need arises. I also like the sheer outgoing personality that Americans have. This is no doubt due to the fact that I am (or rather was) a bit of a party animal! I love to talk, so being amongst a crowd of enthusiastic people suits me fine!

So, whatever our times may bring, in the way of troubles between our two countries, I sincerely wish that we keep that “Special relationship” so often talked of by our politicians. I, for one, would dearly miss it…

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Just how did you start being interested in UFO’s?

Perhaps it was a close encounter which fired up your interest, or reading a certain book? For me it was the latter.

During the mid 1970’s I came upon a book in my local bookstore, whilst looking for ghost reference works.

The book in question was “Chariots of the Gods” by E. Daniken. Now infamous, this book, questionable as it may be, according to some, did however fire up many thousands of young persons minds, and mine included.

I already had a real love of history, so making the connection between history and ufology was not difficult for me. I began to question all the historical facts that I had been taught in school. A good thing, to a certain point.

The blinkers had been well and truly removed from my eyes, and I began to see events with a totally new perspective. From then on there was no stopping me! I nearly took up residence in my bookstore!

Buying at least six or seven new books on the subject of UFO’s a week. I began to go skywatch on our local piece of common land, and spent many a cold night out in my parent’s garden, armed with my astronomical telescope.

From these humble beginnings came a near lifetime’s obsession. I now own many hundreds of books on ufology, and I have been on so many skywatches etc, that I have lost count. Yet, I still am filled with wonder every time I see something odd in the sky. The hairs still stand up on the back of my neck, when that object appears above me or wherever. It is a feeling that will never leave me, and to think, it all began with a book…

AND FINALLY…

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank Nick for having me on his website. And I would also like to thank you, the reader, for putting up with my little ramble into my life and times! My best wishes to you all!

    Nigel,

Part of my roots come from across the pond in Scotland, so I’ve always thought of England as sort of America’s older brother. It would be nice if you guys would sometimes do the older brother thing and slap a few of our politicians down when they’re about to commit us to do something less than intelligent (insert here your favorite stupid thing our leaders have done in the last 20 or so years.) Maybe a nice, elder brotherly ass-whoopin’ from time to time is what we need!

Hi Raven!..I do like your sense of humour!..perhaps the thought of a load of brits coming over the big pond, and taking your leaders to task might, however, be taken as a bit over the top by some!

take it from my Raven, some of our so-called leaders could do with simular treatment now and again!..:)
