An Alien Interview

In August of this year, I’ll be speaking at the Weird 09 conference in England. The organizers recently interviewed me for the official website of the gig, and which can be found online right here. And as a taster, here’s an extract from the interview:

Nick: “I’m absolutely certain that the next 50 years will be the same as the previous 50 years. A lot of research will be done, a lot of theories will be discussed, a lot of books will be written, and a lot of people will shout very loudly at other people who disagree with them! I am also certain that 50 years from now, we still won’t know what UFOs are, and people will still be debating about bloody Roswell! The Triangles, the Greys, etc will probably be long gone, and replaced by…well…I’m not sure what. But I’m certain the alien ‘motif’ will be very different. Then again, I have no faith at all that the Human Race will survive much longer - I think we have passed the peak, and it’s pretty much down hill from here for the next couple of centuries. So, it may not matter; as 50 years from now there might not be many people left to care about the occasional weird thing seen in the sky! And if - as I believe - the UFO puzzle could well be Tulpa-based, if there’s no-one left to believe in UFOs or the Tulpas themselves, then they may slowly fade away and out of existence too.”

  1. drew hempel Says:

Nick — just grabbed this from an Amazon review of “The Lucid View” — looks spot-on:

Albert Budden’s UFOs: Psychic Close Encounters (1995), which posits that most ‘paranormal’ experiences are the spontaneous result of natural and artificial electromagnetic waves interacting with man’s psyche, especially his unconscious.

  2. red pill junkie Says:

… Are you by any chance deliberately planning on NOT being invited again to further Weird conferences??

And I’m really looking forward to find out whom of the guest speakers—the one scheduled before or after your exposition—will be claiming that the Aliens will launch a full-scale landing in 2012 ;-)

  3. Nick Redfern Says:

    RPJ

Nope I just tell it as I see it and feel it. Ain’t gonna apologize for that!

  4. Gareth Says:

    UFOs are Tulpa-based? Tulpa?

    Google here I come.

  5. Gareth Says:

Oh come on… you really believe all sightings of structured objects in the sky are the result of thought projection?

I just cant accept that. RADAR says hello.

  6. Nick Redfern Says:

    Gareth

As anyone who knows me well will be fully aware, I’m a very big believer in Tulpa-style phenomena.

That’s fine that you don’t accept that. And that’s precisely why we debate the subject - so we can maybe one day have definitive answers (although I seriously doubt that will ever happen).

You only have to look at how the UFO subject has changed over the years to see how it mirrors belief systems of the time.

In just 100 years the subject has changed (as have our beliefs) from phantom airships, to foo fighters, to ghost rockets, to flying saucers, to flying triangles.

As for the aliens: well, they were long-haired and blond, then there were hairy dwarfs, now Greys.

The “soil-sampling” aliens of long ago have gone - as have (for the most part) the “vehicle interference” cases.

    Now, it’s DNA extractions etc.

50 years ago the aliens wanted to save us from nukes. Today, it’s destruction of the planet via global warming etc.

In other words, the phenomenon is changing as we change - belief in the phenomenon controls the nature of the phenoenon.

  7. Nick Redfern Says:

    Gareth:

One other thing. You said: “You really believe all sightings of structured objects in the sky are the result of thought projection?”

No of course I dont think “all” UFOs are Tulpas/the result of thought projection.

Actually, I VERY clearly said in the interview that only SOME are Tulpas, in my view, and that there are several classes of UFO. Here are my exact words in the interview, so there can be no doubt:

“Today, I think the UFO subject can probably be explained via several phenomena: classified military vehicles, poorly understood natural phenomena, and a genuine UFO mystery that has intelligence behind it, but that probably isn’t extraterrestrial. It might very well be Tulpa/thought-form based. I quite like Mac Tonnies’ ‘cryptoterrestrial’ theory too.”

If I clearly say that, in my opinion, the UFO issue can be defined by “several phenomena,” why do you then ask if I believe it is “all” due to “thought projection?”

That’s the exact opposite of my words. I made it very clear that the Tulpa angle is one of several.

  8. Nick Redfern Says:

    Thanks Drew!

  9. Gareth Says:

Thanks for the replies Nick. I think there is definitely an element of projection involved. Sorry I thought you said you believed the entire phenomena can be attributed to projection.

In that case, I agree with you. I beieve Tulpa plays a part in some way. Although Im not sure how, or how much.

  10. Gareth Says:

BTW, shame on me for not clicking through and reading the actual interview before commenting.

  11. Nick Redfern Says:

    Gareth
No problem - I rarely read my own interviews! LOL. But yeah, I do believe the Tulpa issue is a facet of the subject - but one of several. I’m definitely looking forward to mac Tonnies Cryptoterrestrials book, which has zero to do with Tulpas, but is not ET driven either. I predict when it’s published it’s likely to be a big talking-point.

  12. Gareth Says:

I agree. Mac’s book is easily my most anticipated new book dealing with the UFO subject. The more I think about it, and the more I read and hear certain things the idea just makes more and more sense as a possible explanation for some of the reported encounters.

Fingers crossed we’ll see it this year!

  13. TANATA Says:

Ask someone like Whitney Strieber and other UFO abductees if their experiences were the result thought projection. Apparently those anal probes are cold. No question that UFO’s exist, otherwise why would we be talking about them? The exist because logic and the Vatican and ABC News with the late Peter Jennings say they exist, along with countless others … and numerous nations who have released or are about to release their UFO files. It is disingenuous to suggest that UFO’s do not exist simply because one hasn’t seen one. The Vatican, at least, knows something that we don’t know, very apparently.

  14. TANATA Says:

grayrc@me.com … subscribe me to the comments …

  15. Nick Redfern Says:

    Tanata

Yes, of course UFOs exist! I am a firm believer that UFOs exist. I am not, however, a firm believer that those UFOs that DO exist have extraterrestrial origins.

The whole point about Tulpas is that they may maninfest independent existence from their creator.

How extensively have you read Strieber’s books? Are you aware of the account of his uncle who was in the USAF, and who stated his awareness of a classified USAF report that concluded that the ability of the “visitors” to exist in our world was in part based on our acceptance that they existed. And that general denial and disbelief in their existence could hold them at bay.

That is VERY Tulpa/thought-form like in nature.

  16. Gareth Says:

TANATA it appears you did what I did: only read the excerpt of the interview posted here. Nick believes (and I agree) that some sort of psychosomatic projection is involved in some way in some cases. Not all.

The funny thing is, Ive heard Nick on podcasts talking about his views, and I knew he didnt chalk the whole thing up to projections. :)

  17. not_anonymous Says:

“Are you aware of the account of his uncle who was in the USAF…”

    Heya Nick,

Would you perchance be able to cite a loose reference for this story? Was it in a particular book of Strieber’s or something he posted online? I seem to recall him telling a story in association w/ his book The Grays about a relative in the military more or less validating his version of Roswell but I can’t recall if the belief/disbelief thing was in there as well or elsewhere.

  18. Nick Redfern Says:

    not_anonymous:

Yes, it was in one of his books. It definitely wasn’t in Communion, and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t in Transformation. So, it would have been in one of his 1990s-era books. Unfortunately, which one, I’m not sure.

  19. Mullpig Says:

The book in question wouldn’t be ” Majestic” by any chance?

  20. Mullpig Says:

Actually come to think of it I’m sure he goes into some of his uncles stuff in “Break through” in the latter part of the book. Sorry, I’m not much help. One splif too far lol.

  21. red pill junkie Says:

    Maybe it’s in ‘Confirmation’?

Anyway, check his site unknowncountry and his journal. He mentions that story often.

  22. Nick Redfern Says:

    Mullpig:
It definitely wasn’t Majestic, as that was Strieber’s novel on Roswell. As RPJ says, it may have been Confirmation. Or possiibly: Breakthrough.

  23. Mullpig Says:

Thanks for the info nick! I never got round to reading Confirmation. I’ll check it out. I was on a different plain at the time of writing the above!

  24. not_anonymous Says:

fyi, Confirmation is on Google books and that story doesn’t seem to be included. I’ll check out Breakthrough.

  25. Nick Redfern Says:

    NA:
Yeah, it may well be Breakthrough.
