UK Wind Turbine Hit By UFO?

Reports today by the Times and Sun (UK) tell of damage to wind a turbine at a power facility in Lincolnshire. One of the 300-foot tower’s blades was severely bent and another was broken off by an unknown object at about 4AM on January 7th.

There are two theories of the cause so far: A semi-secret UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) or “something else.” Witnesses saw “flaming orange balls of light” flying around the area before the damage was discovered.

From the more sensationalistic Sun article:

“John Harrison, another witness, described how he looked out of his landing window and saw a “massive ball of light with tentacles going right down to the ground” over the wind farm. He said: “It was huge. With the tentacles it looked just like an octopus.”

Strangely, the turbine blade which was sheared off was nowhere to be found.

It turns out they recovered the blade. I heard on a news report that it’s being sent to the company that made it (in Germany) to see if they can shed light on what happened.

  2. Greg Bishop Says:

    BenD,

I’ll bet what happened is that that blade sheared off and hit the other one. No idea if the flying things or other aerial phenomena had anything to do with it.

  3. red pill junkie Says:

What were the atmospheric conditions during the incident?

Could it be that wind turbines can—under the right conditions—attract ball lightning?

John Harrison’s description: a “massive ball of light with tentacles going right down to the ground”.

Before I switched to studying Environmental Science at university, I tried my hand at Engineering Science, and John Harrison’s description could in fact be a highly accurate description of the actual ‘UFO’ impact itself, i.e., whatever ‘hit’ the propellors could’ve resulted in a large initial spark being produced, followed by an explosion of lesser sparks flying in all directions, (ultimately, floating down towards the ground), as a result of the stress induced in the metal of the propellors.

To the human eye, especially at night and at a distance, such a sight might indeed take on the appearance of an ‘octopus’ made of light.

I can’t remember where, but I read that one possible reason for the blade breaking off was that due to the cold weather we’d been experiencing last weekend ice could have formed in hairline cracks in the blade which eventually led to it breaking off and hitting its neighbour — either that, or ice that had built up on a neighbouring blade slid off and hit the ‘missing’ one.

And yes, although the Sun said it had disappeared, it was on the ground next to the turbine…

Oh, and there were reports of fireworks being set off for an 80th birthday party nearby, which could explain the reports of lights.

In a remarkable twist of fate, I made a new aquaintance on Saturday who was on the phone to the turbine’s owner when news first reached him that the turbine had broken, so it’s possible that I could get the inside scoop on this with only a couple of degrees of seperation between me and a key figure.
