Mollie Thompson: “From Worlds Afar”

In 2007, I posted a song by British contactee Mollie Thompson. More info has appeared online concerning her record album and even a bit on her life, as well as a personal message.

Andy Roberts, co-author (with David Clarke) of the 2007 book Flying Saucerers, contacted Thompson and interviewed her. I checked again at the site where I got the mp3s (since removed) and found that as of April of 2008, Ms. Thompson was still alive and wrote a reply at the WFMU entry on her album From Worlds Afar, released on the “Asteroid” label in 1966:

Mutterings from Mollie.

Yes, I’m still here–alive and–if not kicking, at least the motor is still ticking over.
Somebody said to me the other week, ’So, what are you doing now?’I had to have a little think about that, but eventually I came up with a reply.

“The secrecy of my work prevents me from knowing what I am doing”

It is over 40 years since I wrote and sang those songs about space people. I didn’t know what I was doing then either…but I had great fun doing it.

I’m sure you have guessed by now that I never actually met and spoke with flesh and blood space people in silver suits who had arrived in their vehicles: flying saucers or UFO’s.

Vehicle is the key word here; my songs were the vehicle to carry my thoughts and ideas out into the world. But as for who wrote them ?? I was NOT telling lies when I said that it was not me…certainly not the “me” that is sitting here writing this.

Every person is far MORE than the sum of their parts, and MORE than they appear to be.

Each individual is more knowing, more understanding, more loving and more loveable, and each of us has the potential to be a truly wonderful human being. That MORE was what created the song words and also what pushed me gently aside and took over the driving of the vehicle—for a while. Then someone was jumping back into the driving seat saying ‘Step back, let me live this life’.

However, the older I get the more I hope to see MORE at the wheel, driving the vehicle.
She is a better driver than I am !

Cheers,
Have a good life,

Mollie Thompson

Her non-literal attitude on her contact reminds me of a video I still have somewhere of an Orfeo Angelucci (American UFO contactee) interview from the mid-1980s. In it he says something like “What I think happened is that I dreamed it and it came back through my subconscious as visions.” Does this mean that Mollie, Orfeo, and others dreamed everything up without acknowledging the non-physical source of their experiences that kept saucer fans on the edge of their seats in the 1950s and ’60s? Perhaps. I prefer to think that at least a few of them may have had at least some mental contact with things from outside of their own consciousness, and chose to frame it in a science-fiction context, because it was the only mental “box” they had to put it in.

My good friend Miles Lewis of Anomaly Radio has posted a youtube clip of Mollie Thompson from an obscure early 1990s documentary. Unfortunately, the producers of the video chose to mar the segment with annoying opening credits graphics, sound effects, and a harmonizing voice. At least we get to see Mollie on film! This is the same song which I posted, entitled “Cockeyed Ballad.”

Her songs are innocent, spiritual and optimistic, and almost move me to tears. While everyone else apparently chose to write books about space brothers, Thompson channeled a very listenable message and set it to music. Of course, many musicians, authors, and other artists have said that they are only a vehicle or channel for what is attributed to them.

Much more on Thompson and her whole record album (in low-bitrate mp3s) is available on a site maintained by Simon Murphy.

Greg, thank you for finding and posting this update.

I fell in love with her the moment I saw that video on that documentary. I loved the lyrics and melody plus her incredibly cute demeanor.

I wish her well and hope she is happy, healthy and with kind friends and family wherever she may be.

Oh! And the songs are available for download at the link you provided. Plus PDFs of her poetry.

Thanks Greg. I recently read a article about a contactee/cult leader who starved herself to death. This is the cute, upbeat side of the movement- but I guess there was a dark side as well.

Greg I recently watched The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula LeGuin, reissued on dvd. The story is about a man who has dreams which then reactively change the physical reality of the world before the dream took place. He has to go to this shrink for it and he dreams about this horse which then suddenly manifests in the shrink’s office. I suddenly remembered I once had this really vivid dream of a white horse running along the ocean. I told my girlfriend about it right when I woke up. I thought it was signicant symbolically because of the Freudian symbol — which is also what the shrink in the movie says about this man’s horse dream. Then I remembered that in fact my girlfriend and I ended up traveling to the outer banks of North Carolina - Cape Hatteras and indeed we there saw a wild white horse running along the beach. Then I realized that was the earliest dream I can remember which then later came physically true. I once recorded a very vivid dream in my journal right after it happened and I wrote that I thought it was predicting the future. I then confirmed this journal entry after long forgetting it — 3 years later — of my activist friends with Native Americans standing on the roof of a house holding a banner to protect a wooded area. Pretty specific dream and it become physically true. I’ve since had many other dreams like that but have stopped recording them since I see no point in trying to “prove” this.

Anyway in the Lathe of Heaven the man dreams of aliens invading Earth because it’s the ultimate means for humanity to become united against a common enemy, therefore ending all human warfare. The aliens turn out to be quite metaphysical and talk about the heaven but they look like robots. haha.

Of course that dream has in a sense very much become physical reality, which is the focus of the book, “The Stargate Conspiracy” by Prince and Picknett.

DH … precog dreams are awesome, especially when properly documented.

As for THE LATHE OF HEAVEN - excellent book and movie. Didn’t care much for the remake a few years ago.

To me, the aliens in the movie looked like turtles more than anything:
