Bell & The Mutilators
Some of you may have seen the news yesterday about the death of Griffin B. Bell, who served as Attorney General under President Jimmy Carter (see this link for details).
You may be wondering what the death of Bell has to do with UFO Mystic. Well, I’ll tell you!
Following a series of cattle mutilations that occurred in and around Dulce, New Mexico between 1976 and 1978, Manuel S. Gomez, a rancher who had himself lost a number of cattle, approached the then Senator for New Mexico (and a former astronaut), Harrison Schmitt, and requested that enquiries be made to determine if, finally, some form of investigation could be instigated to settle the problem.
Schmitt duly complied and on 10 July 1978 wrote to Chief Martin E. Vigil of the New Mexico State Police and informed him of the concerns of Manuel Gomez and other ranchers in the area, many of who were also losing livestock to the elusive mutilators with worrying regularity.
Aware that Police Officer Gabe Valdez of Espanola had investigated a number of such cases, Vigil asked Captain P. Anaya of the Espanola Police to forward him copies of all relevant paperwork, which could in turn be made available to Senator Schmitt, should he wish to take matters further.
As a result, by October 1978, Schmitt was in receipt of Valdez ’s files and, armed with the evidence that something truly mind-blowing was taking place, mailed a letter voicing his concern to none other than the now departed Attorney General of the Department of Justice, Griffin B. Bell.
Schmitt wrote:
“During the past several years, ranchers throughout the West, including my home state of New Mexico, have been victimized by a series of cattle mutilations. As a result, these ranchers have as a group and individually suffered serious economic losses. While an individual cattle mutilation may not be a federal offense, I am very concerned at what appears to be a continued pattern of an organized interstate criminal activity. Therefore, I am requesting that the Justice Department re-examine its jurisdiction in this area with respect to the possible reopening of this investigation.”
Attorney General Bell responded with speed and assured Senator Schmitt:
“I have asked Philip Heymann, head of the Criminal Division to look into our jurisdiction over the cattle mutilation problem with which you are concerned. I must say that the materials sent me indicate the existence of one of the strangest phenomenons [sic] in my memory.”
Bell wasn’t wrong about the high-strangeness afoot, and thus began one of the weirdest episodes in the Justice Department’s history, the details of which can be found in my book, On the Trail of the Saucer Spies.

In 1972 my family and I moved from Dallas to North East Texas,Hopkins County.
I was a kid,and had never seen a cow other than at the state fair.
My Uncle owned a dairy on Tx Hwy 11,between Sulphur Springs and Commerce,and of course I just loved to hang out there.
One morning,one of the large Hölstein cows was missing,and after a short search,was found dead at the back of the property.
The cheek area,the udders,and a large square shaped piece of skin from the spine were removed. There was no blood.
there were no tracks other than the cows.
It was not uncommon to loose cows as
the winters were bad at that time,and my uncle had plenty of chances to see what
buzzards,coyotes,and the like do to a carcass.
He said this was like nothing he had seen in the past.
For the next few years these things happened over and over in Hopkins,Hunt,Delta counties.
There was no talk of strange aircraft or any of that.
This is Heavy right wing Christian contry,so the killings were blamed on “Devil Cults”.
The killings stoped,but I will never forget that cow that cold morning ,thirty seven years ago.
