ET & Religion

The new issue of Fate magazine includes an article from Paola Harris titled Vatican Gives Nod To ETs. As Harris says:

On May 14, 2008, Father Gabriel Funes, the Jesuit priest who directs the Vatican’s observatory at Castel Gandolfo near Rome, declared: “As an astronomer, I continue to believe that God is the creator of the Universe. The search for extraterrestrial life does not contradict belief in God.” He added that some aliens might even be innocent of original sin. “How can we rule out that life may have developed elsewhere?” Funes said. “Just as we consider earthly creatures as ‘a brother,’ and ‘sister,’ why should we not talk about an ‘extraterrestrial brother’? It would still be part of creation.”

When Funes calls the extraterrestrial “our brother or sister,” we are involved in some revolutionary thinking. That statement goes beyond saying that we are not alone in the Universe.

A sizeable section of the article can be read at the link above.

“He believes adamantly there must be creatures between us and the angels on the evolutionary scale. These could be ETs. Humans are at the bottom of the evolutionary ladder because we know the difference between good and evil, and often choose evil.”

This is quite interesting, because it posits no direct distinction between biological and “spiritual” evolution. Maybe in a million years or so our species could evolve (with or without the use of technology) to become beings of pure energy, something that resembles the modern Catholic interpretation of what an “angel” is.

I once read a book called “The Astronauts of Yahweh” by J.J. Benítez, where he explored the possibility that beings more advanced than us (both technologically and spiritually) could very well be at the service of that driving force of the Universe that we call “God”, and since technically “angel” is nothing but a “messenger”, than the nature of that messenger is of no consequence. That book was one of the reasons I parted ways with the church later in my life.

    Junkie,

I’d be interested in reading that book but a search of his books reveals no such title. Can’t find the title under any other author’s name, either. I don’t suppose you’ve got an IBSN number I could check under?

So aliens are Nazis or subhumans? As long as they get baptized before being slaughtered I guess it doesn’t matter.

    Raven,

I’m sorry to report that the book is only in Spanish (and portugese, according to Amazon). The original title is “Los astronautas de Yavéh”,and the author is Juan José Benítez, who is a very successful writer, but amazingly is almost unknown among the English-speaking community.

The fact that his books have never been translated to English is a complete enigma to me. Maybe TDG publishing should do something about that… ;-)

  6. misteranderson Says:

I see no mention of extraterrestials in bible, so that means there can be no extraterrestials. Father Gabriel is going to burn in the fires of hell for this heresy.

  7. cmdec1984 Says:

Oh give us a break misteranderson, everyone is begining to SEE THE LIGHT that there is NO God…. & from a personal level…… I consider if he does exist…. boy is he evil….. what a horrible being, to let Man do what he does….. if I had created this world, i certainly would not have let Man do what he has done…… get real, we all came from another world anyway, on a comet, all those billions of years ago. We are not natives of this Planet.
I would say that YOU should go burn in hell, BUT guess what….. there is NO Hell!!!! (oh Please….. thank you for letting me get that of my chest)

  8. Roger Knights Says:

I don’t think the Vatican would be saying this unless the CIA had given it a heads-up that disclosure is coming.
