Nick is clearly too modest to mention his own contributions. I particularly liked "Three Men Seeking Monsters", which is simultaneously thought-provoking and hilarious.

RPJ:

Yeah that would make a great t-shirt!

As for UFO books, I'd say "Messengers of Deception (Vallee);" "Above Top Secret" (Good); "Project Beta" (the Gregster); "Communion;" (Strieber); "The Spirit Molecule;" (Strassman - technically not a UFO book, but very relevant); "The Hynek UFO Report;" (Hynek);

As for crypto: "On the Track of Unknown Animals" (Heuvelmans); "Alien Animals" (Bord & Bord); "Sasquatch: The Apes Among Us" (Green); "Monster Hunter;" Downes; "Creatures of the Outer Edge (Clark Coleman); "Hunting the American Werwolf (Godfrey); "Field Guide to Lake Monsters..." (Coleman & Huyghe).

Crossover books that in some ways cover both areas - "Operation Trojan Horse" (Keel); "Mothman Prophecies" (Keel); "The Owlman and Others" (Downes).

That's my choice, anyway, as a primer for people new to the subject! I'm sure I've omitted some major ones!

yet you didn’t provide a list of books that, in your opinion, should be the “backbone” of any aspiring ufologist or cryptozoologist.

Good point. Has Nick ever done a list of what he considers the best books for those interested in the subject(s)? Okay, off to check out the interview.

<i>Forteana or Death</i>. That's worthy of a T-shirt ;-)

But Nick, you recommend to the young kids that might be interested in cryptozoology to read read read, and yet you didn't provide a list of books that, in your opinion, should be the "backbone" of any aspiring ufologist or cryptozoologist.
