Baseball Abducted In Mid-Flight

Inspired by the recent Binall of America baseball special, I found this account of a 1974 minor league game in Florida game gone weird by sports writer Ryan O’Leary from the presumably reliable NWI (Northern Illinois/ Indiana) Times:

Only one reporter was at Wickers that evening — Eric Lincoln of the St. Petersburg Times. Since his account of this event, a three-paragraph aside in a larger piece on the Key West baseball experience, is the only one known to exist, we’ll let him tell the tale. We join Lincoln in the bottom of the first inning, with Lonny Kruger on the mound for the visitors:

…Joe Wallis, the Key West right fielder, hits a high fly ball that seems to be drifting toward the glove of the Cardinal right fielder, John Crider. But the wind is gusting at more than 20 knots and the ball seems to disappear as it falls into its final closing arc.

Crider ducks. He has lost sight of the ball. Jimmy Williams, the Cardinal second baseman, races to his assistance. He ducks, placing both hands over his head for protection. The center fielder, Claudell Crockett, is on the scene with his hands held outward as if to say, ‘Well, where the hell is it?’

Presumably, the ball never came down, since no one ever found it. The play was ruled a home run, and the home team went on to win 7-4. Perhaps the denizens of Bermuda Triangle were short a baseball and decided to take one.

The story was not posted on April 1st, so I assume that it was not a joke.

Let’s see those pesky faustian beings pull that kind of prank on the argentinian soccer league’s finals! The “hinchas” would never let them land one of their ships on their country again :-)

  2. Greg Bishop Says:

    RPJ,

As long as they stayed in the clouds (as in this case) there would be no one obvious to blame!
