Laughlin UFO Conference Trip
On Saturday, I attended the film awards ceremony at the International UFO Congress in Laughlin, Nevada at the invitation of Paul Kimball; filmmaker, UFO blogger and friend. Paul was up for three awards, and won the statuette for “Best Historical UFO Documentary” for his 2007 film “Best Evidence, The 10 Best UFO Cases.” Of course I thought he deserved it.

At the dinner table, I sat next to Robert Dean, who came out of retirement to renew old acquaintances and see what was going on in the UFO world. Although his claims of viewing a NATO document in the 1960s are “interesting if true,” (see below) he is a compassionate soul, and may involve himself in the subject anew. He celebrated his 79th birthday on Sunday, and was honored with a standing ovation when called to the stage by conference organizers.
Also at the table was Peter Robbins, author of Left At East Gate and who was recently named an official for the 2008 Roswell conference by the city council of that town. Peter is always a great source for stories making the rounds of the UFO community, as well as a great storyteller. I got him to agree to tell some of his hilarious traveling tales for a future edition of Radio Misterioso. At last year’s Roswell confab, he told us about the time he was at a showing of Fatal Attraction in New York, many years ago. Just as Glen Close’s character lies still in a bathtub, recently strangled by Michael Douglas, one of the theatergoers yelled out into the silence, “That bitch ain’t dead!” which immediately became our unofficial tagline for the controversy surrounding the Roswell Incident.
After the ceremony, we ended up (as one does at these things) chatting and drinking heavily with friends, old and new. I finally got to meet former Ministry of Defence official Nick Pope. We talked about contactees and cases he came across while he was working for the UK government. Nick’s signature assessment of many claims and stories is “Interesting if True,” and he should copyright it.

Also around the patio bar later were disclosure lobbyist Stephen Bassett and radio show host Rob Simone, both of whom I talked with as well.
For the few hours I was in town, I also got to talk with abduction therapist Barbara Lamb, writer/ researcher Randy Koppang, and UFO Video President Tim Crawford. Others I wanted to hook up with, like remote viewing project scientist Russell Targ, author Richard Dolan, and Turkish researcher Farah Yurdozu had apparently left before I arrived on Saturday afternoon, dammit. For me, conferences are best for all the things that go on before, between, and after the main presentations, although I am sorry I missed some of the talks, such as those from legendary psychologist Dr. Leo Sprinkle as well as Michael Schratt, a newcomer on the scene who spoke on black project aircraft.
Paul Kimball stumbled down to the lobby early Sunday morning and my girlfriend Sigrid drove us by way of Las Vegas to an afternoon rendezvous in Death Valley, a mere 5 hours away.
On the road in Nevada
Publisher David Hatcher Childress, owner and president of Adventures Unimited Books, wanted to see the famous moving rocks of the “Racetrack” dry lake bed. We met up on the nasty 4-wheel-drive-only road out to the site and caravaned in three cars. David was accompanied by his wife Jennifer, and we were joined by L.A. photographer and art gallery owner Douglas Nason and Dylan, a buddy of his from Las Vegas. We arrived just at the “magic hour” for photographs.
Overall, a wonderful couple of days!

You didn’t take your flying machine as per when we were there last year…?

Not enough time to use it and more importantly, way too windy!

Nice to read that Mr. Dean is enjoying good health and doing ok.
BTW, I’m betting my money on the rock at the right corner of the photo

crg,
Thanks. I’m still coughing like everyone else who got this bug. There’s a reason they used to send TB patients to the desert!

mouse,
Yeah, I don’t usually go to any conferences that I have to pay for anymore. Just too expensive.
Dolan should be finished with the new book by now.

RPJ and Mouse,
I saw that picture. Just not interesting enough to mention, especially after some other sites started hyping it up.
