SETI Gets A Kick In The Butt
Our friend Mac Tonnies has started a blog at the Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) website. If you are not aware of SETI, it is an organization dedicated to searching the radio spectrum for evidence of extraplanetary transmissions. The group has also typically been skeptical (in an almost fundamentalist manner) of UFO claims and stories.
SETI began as a government-funded project, and now relies on private donations, most notably from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
Mac has already begun to post essays suggesting SETI should broaden its scope of study to include a search for evidence of extraterrestrial artifacts on the Moon and other bodies in the solar system. For all the distaste directed at SETI for its UFO skepticism, their support of Tonnies’ ideas should be applauded.
Update: Mac has written to remind me that the website that hosts his blog is not affiliated with the SETI project headed by astronomer Seth Shostak. This makes me wonder what SETI thinks of SETI.com.
