Right-o, Nick, and thanks.

One of the most interesting entries is
on Vladimir Ilyushin, alleged to have flown before Gagarin-read the last paragraph if you don't want to sleep
too well tonight. I'll reccomend the
site generally-there is a new article on UFO's up, and the article on Lenticular spacecraft is essential reading for anybody interested in the
possibility of 'Goverment Saucers.'

I haven't seen the latest FT (God, how
I miss the Hierophant...) but this is
not a new story. James Oberg has written on the subject, and there is an excellent article at the ENCYCLOPEDIA
ASTRONAUTICA site. ( Nick, with your permission, I'll post a link to it. )
Thats not to say there couldn't have
been some recovery efforts, but I'd think that would have come out before this.

That makes much more sense than the US government hiding the fact that they have recovered spaceships and alien bodies and hiding these facts from the public in order to quell mass panic.

Lots of folks seem to have forgotten what the Cold War was like--folks were scared to death of the Soviets and their technology--Sputnik was a big deal when it was successfully launched and evoked awe and fear among US citizens. People were constantly aware of their possible demise in a nuclear attack launched by the USSR at any time, and frankly this kind of fear would make the crash landing of Soviet cosmonauts and spaceships on US soil just as likely, if not more likely, to cause panic among our citizenry as the crash landing of aliens from another planet.

If I were an agent of the US government, and I wanted to hide the fact that I was recovering one of our own crashed spy balloons meant for surveillance of the USSR and its nuclear tests, I would certainly use the "flying saucer" explanation as a red herring. I would do the same if I was cleaning up a failed Soviet manned spacecraft on our soil. To do so would allow American scientists to look through the wreckage to see what technology was used in the spacecraft, while the rumors of alien bodies flew for generations, effectively hiding the truth in plain sight.

I think it is a brilliant, and probable explanation for quite a few old cases.
