The Green Fireballs
Long before Ufology had even heard of Alien Abductions, Flying Triangles, Contactees and Vehicle Interference cases, curious phenomena were seen soaring across the skies of New Mexico and elsewhere. They became known as the Green Fireballs: brightly lit balls of green light that would shoot across the desert skies at night - and particularly in the vicinity of atomic energy installations.
Needless to say, for a couple of years they were of both interest and concern to the military, the FBI, the Atomic Energy Commission and various other agencies, with theories pointing in the direction of aliens, secret government projects, and natural phenomena.
There was even a USAF study program to investigate the mystery that was given the rather ludicrous name of Project Twinkle.
But like so many other (maybe all?) facets of the UFO puzzle, the Green Fireballs had their time in the spotlight; but then they faded away - quite literally. However, now they’re baaaack. On-line, at least.
Over at the Land of Enchantment, mega-blogger Lesley has some interesting comments to make on the subject and provides for your reading pleasure an old news article on the subject.
As Lesley says: “I never quite realized that green fireballs were seen in NM all the way back in 1949. About 10 years ago I saw what at first I thought was a green fireball, but on closer inspection happened to be a powerful green laser shooting into the sky from Sandia/Kirtland AFB. It was supposedly used for some astronomy purpose was the rumor I heard after inquiring with a few people I thought might know the purpose. After that I assumed that probably all green fireball stories were really just lasers and people unfamiliar with lasers were mistaking them for something mysterious.”
Here’s the link to the rest of Lesley’s article.

There was an article in Wired about lasers creating plasma balls in the atmosphere.

Of course, that doesn’t help with green fireballs in 1949, because the laser wasn’t invented yet.
