Weird UFO Sighting Just Now

My friend and Weird California co-author Joe Oesterle just called a few minutes ago (approx. 6:30 PM PST) because he said I was the first person he could think of to report this to.

While we talked on the phone, he described an object with “bright red, white, and blue flashing lights” that was moving off over the Pacific Ocean and receding into the distance. I listened as he said “Wow, now it’s really bright blue, but it’s too far away to make out any details.”

About 10 minutes earlier, while loading clothes into his car at his apartment, Joe looked up to see a round shape “as big as the moon” hovering in a stationary position about 6 inches (by sight of course) from the moon itself. At first he thought that he was looking at the moon, until he noticed that there were two “moons” in the sky. As he watched, the round, white object with its red, white and blue flashing lights appeared to become engulfed by a shadow which resembled “tentacles, or fingers” until it was obscured, although the flashing lights remained around the preimeter of the “circle.” This all occured within about 30 seconds. “I finally decided I had to get a picture of this” says Oesterle, and he ran inside to get his camera.

When he was back outside, the object had moved to ”about 4 or 5 miles away” or appeared to have done so. He called me at that time to describe what was happening. The UFO continued to flash its bright, multicolored lights as it receded into the distance over the ocean.

This doesn’t sound like any other sighting I’ve heard or read about. I suppose that there is the possibility that Joe either mistook something mundane for something extraordinary, or he’s pulling my leg. He says he’ll try and send me a photoshop mockup of what he saw. It will be posted here when it arrives.

We’ll have to wait and see if this weird sighting is called in to the National UFO Reporting Center or Brian Vike’s HBCC organization, since it did occur over a highly populated area in the mid-evening.

No news popping up right now, but a quick search reveals that there is a company called UFO Design in Huntington Beach, and during the “Battle Of LA” in 1942, unidentified objects flew over Los Angeles while antiaircraft fire and searchlights lit up the night sky before the object or objects flew out over the ocean near the now-upscale beach community.

Very cool. Please keep us updated Greg. Bummer that you didn’t get to see it.

  2. Richelle Hawks Says:

Very cool the first thing that comes into mind is the space station–we saw it once unexpectedly, and it was bizarre. It had some of the same features your friend described.

  3. BenDoverEsq. Says:

Just walked outside and saw some meteors. Big meteor shower tonight. None of ‘em were red, white, and blue unfortunately. Did see a green one once, but not tonight.

  4. Greg Bishop Says:

    BDE,

I’ve seen lots of green meteors–one left a glowing trail that went almost from one horizon to the other.

I don’t think Joe’s sighting qualifies as a meteor, though.

  5. Greg Bishop Says:

    Richelle,

I’ve seen the ISS too, but it just looked like a big, moving star.

How was your sighting similar to this one?

  6. Greg Taylor Says:

    Hi Greg,

I didn’t see any red, white and blue lights, but I did see a Moon sized UFO/UAP earlier this year:

Really kicking myself that I didn’t pay more attention at the time.

    Kind regards,
    Greg

  7. Richelle Hawks Says:

When I saw the ISS, it didn’t look anything like a star…we saw changing lights and colors, and could even make out shapes of the structure as it moved, some blocking the lights. So, I related that “fingers or tentacles blocking” feature of your friend’s sighting with that. Maybe too vague. I looked up its position last night after I write that comment, and it looked like it was near texas/mexico. How fast does it travel? Probably not the station.
I wonder too, if differences in elevation would affect a ISS viewing, or if it would be negligible. It seemed very close, like a really high airplane.

  8. red pill junkie Says:

So, I guess he wasn’t able to take a pic of the object right? too bad :-(

Hey Greg, have you read Whitley Strieber’s account of what he saw on Dec 7 in Santa Monica? there’s a post in his journal at unknowncountry.com

  9. Greg Bishop Says:

    Greg,

That’s a weird sighting of yours. I have a feeling that a lot of strange-looking things in the sky are never reported because people don’t think that they look like anything they can describe properly.

  10. Greg Bishop Says:

    Richelle,

Here’s a description from the NASA website:

A typical sighting looks like this: A dim speck of light–the space station–appears near the horizon. It brightens rapidly as it glides overhead, leisurely crossing the sky in 3 to 6 minutes. You can’t see details like solar panels with the unaided eye, but the station is nevertheless beautiful. At its best, it can outshine every star and planet except the sun and moon. More often it looks like an ordinary bright star–eye-catching because it moves.

However, I’d trust you before NASA any day. If you see it like this again, try and get a picture.

  11. Greg Bishop Says:

    RPJ,

He said that he was so amazed that he didn’t think about his camera until it was too late.

I read about Strieber’s sighting. Sort of reminds me of Terence McKenna’s South American sighting of an Adamski-type craft. He theorized that something was playing a cosmic joke on him.

  12. Richelle Hawks Says:

That’s certainly sweet of you. I certainly am not intentionally confabulating, but it’s highly posible that I am interjecting features into my memory. I clearly recall being able to make out an oblong-ness, other shapes attached to it, and there were multiple lights. I was with Steve Wagner, the absolute most rational, non-confabulatory person I have ever known, so I will ask him for clarification on the sighting. I’m in the foothills of Salt Lake–would altitude affect a viewing?

  13. Richelle Hawks Says:

Well, so much for the accuracy of my memory. I asked steve to recount the sighting and he said: ‘It looked like a really bright star, kind of a pinpoint, moving slowly across the sky.’ I remember it totally differently. He tried to help out by saying I didn’t have my glasses on. I remember a shape and multiple lights, and a fast movement. It’s kind of alarming having a memory that you know is probably completely false.

  14. Greg Bishop Says:

    Richelle,

I guess NASA wins this round.

Perhaps Steve’s memory is wrong, but the fact you may not have had your glasses on may mitigate this somewhat, but it may also partially explain the “strange objects parked in orbit” subject: Perhaps the anomalous thingies are a result of poor optics in the telescope that guy is using.

  15. Richelle Hawks Says:

Or, as my case demonstrates, a somehow twisted, inaccurate relaying/presentation of information.

  16. disownedsky Says:

I’m confused about how he could have made the “two moons” interpretation, since the moon was nowhere near full on 13 December.

The description of shadows is too vague, but it sounds like a cloud.

  17. Greg Bishop Says:

    disowned,

You’re right about the moon, but clouds aren’t round, don’t move at high speeds (if Joe was watching the same thing after coming back outside)and don’t have multicolored flashing lights.

  18. massagefellow Says:

Much activity has been seen here in the Exeter section of Rhode island, people being turned away from the southwestern general area around the intersection of 102 & rt. 2. Black triangles and the like, military people threatening friends and people I know. This has a military base, a small one, in the area. Multiple sightings, many not reported out of fear. We dont want the MIB visiting us………

  19. Greg Bishop Says:

    massagefellow,

Always nice to see new commenters on the site. Welcome!

In your case the MIBs might be Military In Black. More UFOs covering up experimental aircraft, perhaps.
