Square Craters On The Moon
In the last published issue of The Excluded Middle, we included a report on apparent angular craters about 200 miles from the north pole of the moon. My friend and co-editor, Peter Stenshoel met the author at a social function. In the course of casual conversation, William Haynes mentioned that he had written a privately published paper on lunar anomalies.
Haynes is no kook. He has a distinguished career in aerospace spanning over 50 years, and a degree in mechanical engineering. In the preface to his 1990 paper, he wrote:
In 1970 a selected compilation of lunar photographs was published by NASA in a book entitled: “The Moon as Viewed by Lunar Orbiter” by L.J. Kosofsky and Farouk El-Baz. Among the photos taken was one of an area near the Lunar North Pole. It appears on Pg. 14 and is captioned (in part): “The very low solar elevation brings out the apparent squareness of the shallow depressions at E13, G12, and J14″ (The references are to coordinates on the photo).
“Square craters?” I was intrigued! In fact, so intrigued that I ordered a full size copy that photograph.
Using shadows and the angle of the sun at this latitude, Haynes calculated the smallest of these three anomalies to have walls of about 4600 feet in height. There are two larger formations and the smaller is exactly half their size.

…there are only two possible over-all conclusions:
The first is that I have applied procrustean reasoning to an accident of nature; in short, that I am seeing things that are not there. The second is that we are confronted with an alien artifact at least 3.9 billion years old and of truly colossal proportions.
In strange coda to this story, in 1999, Haynes contacted the administrators of the Clementine Naval moon-mapping project to request clearer images of the anomalous area, and discovered that one of the images was apparently altered with some sort of photo editing software.

Japan & China have sent probes to the Moon. Inias is planning on sending one too.
I really hope they get a closer look on all those anomalies.

They could keep it at the south pole of the moon, where there is supposed to be water ice.
There is a wacky history of moon anomalies, including a 1960s-era book I have where the author saw cursive English writing in the moon dust!

Perhaps Mr. Haynes can request unaltered imgages from these organizations, as long as they have polar-orbit probes.

What’s that !! The authorities using image altering software! Good grief!!!

Oh lord, I would love to see that book. What’s the title? Probably long out of print, but available used at amazon? I remember some urban legend type moon things from the 70s–I always assumed they derived from the ‘coke can’ stories of the live moon landing telecast.

Easy explanation on this one, kids. The moon, as we all know, is comprised primarily of cheese.(Lunar Velvetta, to be precise. That’s the scientific name.) Furthermore, a giant named Ramon lives on the moon and loves grilled cheese sandwiches. To this end, Ramon–using advanced lunar tehnologies–has this huge anti-grav scooper thingy that cuts at huge square pieces of cheese, which he of course then uses for his sandwiches.Yummo!!(To qoute hottie Rachel Ray). Now you know the rest of the story….

Barringer Crater (”Meteor Crater”) in Arizona is square, too. I’ve always been surprised that I’ve never seen any fuss over that. Take a look at the pics at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barringer_crater

I never noticed that. Interesting stuff. I would suspect that this might be due to erosion and perhaps internal geologic stresses, but that might be akin to what is going on on the moon as well. By this I mean geologic stressing (craters that might have been deformed by existing symmetrical cracks in the crust) and intermittent “erosion” from other impact ejecta.

I do tend to agree, Greg, as I have a B.S. in Geology, but there’s no real way for me to tell, as I’ve never been on the Arizona site personally. Any professional I’ve mentioned the “square crater” to shrugs and moves on, which I’ve found to be a fairly common reaction from scientists when dealing with anomalies. Unfortunate, that.
