We Are Aliens

A new article at the Science Now site reports on an international team of scientists who have discovered that:

…life might be able to evolve in an astoundingly simple fashion. Reporting online in today’s issue of the New Journal of Physics, a team from Russia, Germany, and Australia details how computer simulations of molecular dynamics can produce conditions under which evolution appears to begin spontaneously. In their simulations, free-floating molecules begin organizing into a helixlike structure resembling DNA, and as time passes, more stable molecular arrangements begin replacing less-stable versions. The process proceeds, the authors say, because an electrical property called polarization tends to organize the particles and reduce chaos, much like tuning a radio to the proper frequency can produce clear audio from the static. The findings are particularly intriguing, they say, because molecular clouds are common across the universe, such as in vast zones of dust among the stars of the Milky Way.

If one of these vast clouds of “organized dust” were to enter the atmosphere of a hospitable world, the thinking goes, and not burn up in the process, an encounter with water and other essential compounds would make life not only possible, but perhaps abundant.

When I saw the link to this article at Mac Tonnies site, it reminded me of an Alan Watts lecture that I have on the ipod. Watts proposes the idea that life is inherent in matter with his simple statement, “Where there are rocks, watch out, because one day the ‘rocks’ are going to get up and start moving around.”

We may be just starting to recognize the “intelligence” inherent in the Universe, which may also be called anti-entropic.

Sounds about right to me, from a religious/philosophical p.o.v. in principal. I’m not talking about the hellfire/brimstone end-of-days religion that is vainly being pushed upon the masses by fanatics but by the deeper more spiritual portions of religion that the fanatics tend to ignore in their quest for power. It’s referred to in any almost every religious text including the New Testament of the Christian Bible. Out of chaos, comes order and order eventually collapses into chaos again. The yinyang , the Star of Davis and the non-Nazi version of the swastika are all symbols that refer to the balance of forces in nature and its cyclical nature. The fact that we humans are basically knots and strings of chemical elements that appear to self organize seems perfectly natural to me. At some point in the future(if we don’t blow ourselves up), we’ll likely figure out what forces of the sub-atomic level that drive the self-organization of these chemical elements. The real question is are we actually discovering them or are the self-organizing elements revealing themselves to us or even driving us to search for them ?

    crgintx,

Perhaps the search for the organizing principle is itself part of the process. I tend to keep my opinions about religion out of posts, but in general, I think we’re on the same wavelength.
