Except for a few fundamentalist religious types, the proof of visitors from other planets or whereever is such a non-life changing issue I’m surprised that yahoo gave it any coverage at all. If the aliens came down and offered a clean pollution free energy source that might be real world shaking news but proof that we’re being visited isn’t. Ask the shaman from any isolated tribe seperated from modern technology and he’ll tell that we’re being visited as well. Perhaps we modern types should accept that we have need of shamans and not govt. proof of ET’s

I think the scientific establishment would have as much as, if not more of a meltdown than the religious fundies. Religious Fundies already tend to write UFOs off as demonic in origin anyway, so such a revelation wouldn’t really shatter their world.

uth, as Greg Bishop has stated so brilliantly on his Radio Mysterioso Show, fundamentalism has damn little to do with religion and more with belief. Science and scientific research is a belief system based on quantifiable and repeatable values in the physical realm without ethical comment. But every now and then scientific values get knocked on their collective can by a paradigm shift in the human thinking and perception. We’ve gone from the steam age to the information in less than 100 years and now scientific historians are realizing that our ancestors were every bit as technologically sophisticated in many aspects of science and engineering as we are without our modern measuring equipment. IMHO we’re now communicating through the use of the most complex human invention ever, the internet which is expanding at what can only be described as near biological intensity. Perhaps the aliens aren’t wanting to contact us at all but our technological offspring, the new intelligent life form on the planet, the internet, as it becomes self aware. Our intelligence is limited by our biological limitations but the new intelligent life form may have an unlimited capacity for learning.
Just thought I’d throw that out there for those fundy scientific types.

Andy, IMHO a shaman is best described as a person who knows the culture and community well enough to interpret its complex systems to suggest effective solutions for its members. As we have accepted non-religious beliefs, we’ve lost much of comfort related with tribalism. Traditional shamans used natural hallucinigens to contact the non-material plane to seek a solution for a members problem. Many of these shamans would now be classified as the mentally ill because often these contacts with the spirit world would manifest themselves in childhood to early adulthood without the use of drugs. In earlier cultures such children were often considered a blessing because they could speak to the ancestors for wisdom. Again IMHO I think that shamanic practice is on the rise again despite Judeo/Christian/Islamic 2000 year war upon it as modern folks seek spiritual relief from the hectic pace of the modern life. It’s coming back in a high tech fashion through the internet. People are often seeking alternative solutions like meditation for relief rather than traditional avenues such as drugs and counselers. People today see much of modern world’s technological advancements as spiritually stunted and less useful than its promoters have presented it to be. In a great sense, the internet may be interpretted as a stream of consciousness where modern humans can communicate with the greater human consciousness. The key practice to shamanism, modern or traditional, is contacting a greater consciousness by means outside the normal senses.

Can you recommend any books on shamanism? Is it possible that shamanism is regressive & not progressive? Is it possible that anomalous experiences can be understood as a Jungian-type manifestation of the collective unconscious? Is there anything in shamanism that could be detected? Just a few questions……..

Andy, I’m strictly a lay-person. Jung makes my teeth hurt from gritting. I feel that many of his conclusions aren’t that objective ie culturally biased. Here’s one source of info:

I suggest that you experience altered perceptive states without drugs first through fasting and sweat lodges aka saunas. There are several other methods of altering perception without drugs like sensory deprivation chambers and long distance running or biking. The human brain is marvelous piece of biological enginnering but is delicate and can easily manipulated with both mental and physical exercise. Ancient cultures learned this early on. Rites of passage from childhood to adulthood often required tremendous physical exertion and stress to alter the youth’s understanding of the physical world. It’s often reported that after such rites the iniate would experience dreams of the long ancestors.

I don’t feel shamanism is either regressive or progressive but an alternative means or definition of perception. I think that humans have racial memory hard wired into our biology. Some studies of half siblings raised apart without knowing each other show many of them having similar habits and interests to their common parent.
I believe shamanic practice can sharpen our natural senses and awareness of what George Lucas has so aptly coined as the Force or life force that exists in the environment.
