Plans for “Greener” Airplanes Look Familiar
According to an article published yesterday at the gizmag site, companies in pursuit of research into more effecient aircraft design and cleaner emissions are looking into a saucer-shaped model as one possibility. One scholarly research institute is spearheading something called the “Clean Era Project”:
With air traffic around the globe growing at a huge rate each year, CO2 emissions from airplanes are set to jump from 2% of global emissions to a possible figure of around 5% by 2050 according to some scientists. Clearly, the passenger airplane needs to be overhauled as part of any emissions-control regime and this is the key point that has driven Etnel Straatsma to set up the CleanEra project at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands.
I hope that they can do more than the Avrocar people or indeed Otis T. Carr.

Quote from the CleanEra project site:”The final design will look nothing like a flying saucer. The illustration on the site is just an artist’s impression.” The gizmag article
seems to be mainly about Boeing ‘Blended
Wing Body’ aircraft, which does look a little saucer-like, from some angles…
Just one more example of using the saucer motif as a pitch, I guess. Pretty
art, but nothing I’ve read in the last thirty-odd years suggests that the
saucer is a viable shape for atmospheric
transport.

Craig,
Good sleuthing, but why did they put up the image if they didn’t think it would look anything like the finished project? Perhaps for publicity, which you suggest, but maybe for some other reason, which paranoids and/ or saucer cultists will be able to supply.
Blended wing designs are one step beyond simple flying wings, which were notoriously unstable. The F-117 (Stealth Fighter) must be flown with computers assisting the pilot becuase of this. This is why I threw in the Avrocar reference.
