Flying Saucer Music #22
From Wikipedia:
The Langley Schools Music Project is a collection of children’s chorus recordings made from 1976-77 by Canadian music teacher Hans Fenger in a school gymnasium in Langley, British Columbia, near Vancouver. The students performed unique versions of pop hits by the likes of The Beach Boys, David Bowie, and Paul McCartney.
In this, my favorite recording from the album, the Chorus chose to sing an old semi-hit by the Canadian rock group Klaatu. John Woloschuk, one of the original composers of the song said:
The idea for this track was suggested by an actual event that is described in The Flying Saucer Reader, a book by Jay David published in 1967. In March 1953 an organization known as the “International Flying Saucer Bureau” [IFSB] sent a bulletin to all its members urging them to participate in an experiment termed “World Contact Day” whereby, at a predetermined date and time, they would attempt to collectively send out a telepathic message to visitors from outer space. The message began with the words…”Calling occupants of interplanetary craft!”
The song has been covered by at least two other bands, including the Carpenters and Babes In Toyland.
IFSB founder and president Albert Bender did indeed ask the membership to participate in a telepathic experiment to contact space people. He asked all members of the organization to memorize a message that was printed in their newsletter and mentally “send” it to the supposed UFO occupants on March 13, 1953. The original text reads:
Calling occupants of interplanetary craft! Calling occupants of interplanetary craft that have been observing our planet EARTH. We of IFSB wish to make contact with you. We are your friends, and would like you to make an appearance here on EARTH. Your presence before us will be welcomed with the utmost friendship. We will do all in our power to promote mutual understanding between your people and the people of EARTH. Please come in peace and help us in our EARTHLY problems. Give us some sign that you have received our message. Be responsible for creating a miracle here on our planet to wake up the ignorant ones to reality. Let us hear from you. We are your friends.
Bender did the experiment himself and reported a frightening telepathic contact with low-pitched voices that warned him to “discontinue delving into the mysteries of the universe.” Soon after, he received a visit from the now infamous Men In Black and disbanded the IFSB. So much for friendly space brothers.

Greg,
Have to say, I’ve listened to both the versions of this song (clickable here on site) and really like them. They take you back to days of dreamy naivete (and funny smells from that odd cigarette being smoked) when all you needed was love and universal harmonics.
Can really make you feel laid back…
until you suddenly remember that these little “outer space” varmints are really humanoid tulpaforms from hell conjured by Aleister Crowley and Jack Parsons!!!!!
