The UFO Con-Man
The newly-published issue of Fortean Times magazine (issue 222, dated the month of May) includes an article from me titled A Close Encounter of the Unscrupulous Kind that details the highly bizarre story of a long-forgotten contactee and con-merchant named Harold Berney.
The article tells the sad and pathetic tale of how Berney conned a gullible and wide-eyed woman out of her hard-earned dollars back in the mid-1950s. A story that involved the FBI, tales of supposed trips to Venus with the aliens (of course, Harold; how could we ever doubt you…?), an absurdly named alien: “Prince Uccelles,” Berney’s idiotic “modulator” contraption, and the long-gone days of early Flying Saucerdom, it’s one of those truly stranger-than-fiction episodes from the seedier side of ufology.
In other words, it’s a lot of fun (although not for Berney’s victim, it must be said), and you’ll learn much about what drives some people to enter the ufological arena. Thankfully, Berney vanished from sight years ago. But his legacy lives on deep within the vaults of the FBI…
