Jimmy,

Perhaps the TCAS system was warning other aircraft that something that didn't have a transponder was in the area. I don't know if a balloon would do this.

Miles,

It's not a retraction so much as a cautionary comment that it might have been the balloon. Would a latex or mylar balloon survive at 10,000 feet or would it have exploded by then? Was the plane actually at 10K feet? Lotsa questions.

Bill,

I'm afraid that no amount of UFO pictures is going to convince those who refuse to look at the data without a fundamentalist outlook. What I mean is convince them that there is a phenomenon that doesn't fit in with the current reigning Aristotlean viewpoint.

You'd think that there was enough photographic evidence already!

The increasing proliferation of minicams and digital cellphone cameras is starting to kick the teeth out of the "no such thing" crowd and I suspect this trend is only going to continue as the technology improves and people start being being "armed" with recording devices "24/7". Nickell and Schermer will be boohooing profusely when digital imagery increasingly begins to shoot down their owls in flaming tailspins. LOL!!!!

Using a cell phone it may not be too clear. Hopefully it is a clear one. A friend of mine took a intresting photo with more then one of some huge metallic spheres near a farm on Vancouver island. I think it was 3 or 4 of them to which they appeared to be hiding in the clouds. The one in the front had a metallic look to it while the ones behind it were circular looking clouds. Eventhough, because of distance they appeared slightly smaller then the one in front. Will try to get a hold of him and send a copy of photo; if that hasn't disappeared like his negatives.

TCAS isn't a "radar" system as most of us think of it; it works by transponders in aircraft holding conversations with one another. If they were getting a traffic alert, they were getting it from another TCAS transponder somewhere in the area. I hope it wasn't on the "UFO."

Greg, it looks like Scott has posted a retraction on this:

<a href="http://www.virtuallystrange.net/ufo/updates/2007/feb/m03-002.shtml">Mexican UFO Turns Out To Be A Balloon?</a>

Also... I'm VERY glad to see that your webmaster FINALLY updated the site template so that the right hand side of your post pages header is now visible. Hooray!!
